Nonetheless I believe that as soon as you see the smoke coming out of the ships you realize what it is.

Exactly. In a movie you have to leave room for common human sense. It's not that hard to tell that black stuff falling from the sky in one place followed by a cut somewhere else of black stuff flowing into the sky is the same stuff in this context. Even without seeing the series. Humanity has a little edge called intelligence.

I mean, not only did the music match the situation perfectly, but I loved hearing the deep rumbling of the furnaces on the fire nation ships.

It just gave that short clip an incredible amount of atmosphere.
