In the cartoon they DON'T say his name is Aang...in the cartoon they say his name is Eyng or Ayng.

And "Ung" is not how the movie pronounces his name. You should edit your post and replace "Ung" with "Awng" because that is the accurate description for how the movie pronounces his name.

M. Night Shamalan decided to use the sanskrit pronunciations of all of the characters, so "ay-ng" became "aw-ng", "sock-ah" became "soak-ah", "aye-row" became "ee-row", and the like. I would like to point out that this bugged the everlasting crap out of me, seeing as the pronunciations of most of the names was different from the show. Admitedly, this is kind of a minor complant, but it's like a grain of sand in a contact lens; it's something so small and insignificant, yet can irritate and annoy you to no end, and make you want to flush your eyes with eyedrops. (I am of course talking about both)

And for those who weren't bothered by the mispronunciation (if the creators wantd to use sanskrit, they would have), you can't deny the inconcisency with the pronunciation of "Avatar". Sometimes it's "ah-va-tar" and sometimes it's "aw-va-tar". They should have at least gone for being correct or being consistent, but ended up failing at both.This is not the makes for a competent movie, when the oft-used title name (which actually isn't in the title, thank you so much James Cameron and your race of NBA-Smurf-Alien-Cat-thingies) can't be pronounced consistently.

And for those who STILL defend the use of sanskrit with their lives, think about this; if another movie is made, Azula's name (uh-zoo-luh) may be changed to "oh-zoo-luh", or "uh-zoo-loh", or (shivers) "oh-zoo-loh". Do you want one of the most powerful and ruthless firebenders of all time to be called "oh-zoo-loh"? I DON'T!!! Azula may be as strong as the Firelord himself and has the menace of a T-1000, and she might be called "oh-zoo-loh". Poop.

...Although if the next movie portrays her as she was in the last move (instead of being a cold, calculated dealer of death and destruction, she was portrayed as an out-of control lunatic ala Bellatrix LeStrange with a facial tick she stole right from Heath Ledger's Joker, neither of which were done well at all), I mightn't mind so much.

All I know is that I saw the Nickelodeon behind-the-scenes feature, and Mr. Shamalan said he used Sanskrit, specifically mentioning names like Sokka and Aang (...but as my memory clears, it may have in fact been Chinese...oh well). And are you saying that a certain form of pronunciation was used for some of the character names, but not all of them? That's yet another inconcistency, and not a point in the film's favor (and they really did switch between avatar and ovatar in the film). And I didn't copy-paste anything; these are all my original thoughts on the movie. Millions of people just happen to agree with me (or I agree with them, if the egg came before the chicken). Just as you exercise the right to talk about why you like the movie, I'm talking about why I don't.

And how can anybody NOT like Dr.Pepper? (It's always been yummy in MY tummy...)

I have always been more of a Sprite person.

But back on topic, none of the name pronunciations really bothered me (except for Aang's... his name still gets me) Besides his name, I kinda liked how the names were pronounced.

my fav soda is banana! Its awesome! but I can't find it in the US....
anyway, names like "katara" were kept the same because they were already pronounced correctly or were made up. Actually me and hasdi had a disscusion about the names in the Vent Your Current Opinion thread.
