I actually think James Horner has become a bit repetitive. I think this was apparent in Avatar the most. Disappointing score.

There's only so many ways you can play a C minor, dude.

Well, I'm gonna miss her
When I get home
But right now I'm on this lake shore
And I'm sitting in the sun
I'm sure it'll hit me
when I walk through that door tonight
Oh looky there...I've got a bite!

Eh, Horner does tend to reuse his passages (which he in turn lifted from classical composers) often. His danger motif pops up in every movie he scores nowadays, and I can go without a Fire Nation version of said motif.

I'm very happy Howard is doing this.

Avatar's score was indeed a bit disappointing. Repetitive themes, annoying percussions.

And yes, I'm glad JNH is scoring TLA.
That was to stay on-topic :P

Seeing as how we're naming favorite tracks/scores by my beloved James Newton Howard...

[switches on Inner JNH Fangirl]

1. The main theme of Dinosaur was the first piece of his that really caught my ear. Very epic and soaring. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B9ubdk1tuI0 "Across the Desert" is really good too. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7jOTIRrvE4
2. Anything off his Atlantis: The Lost Empire score. Especially, "The Submarine" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3iwvG2ZKuw and "Just Do It". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfnr8e8hC6E
3. The main theme from Treasure Planet, best rendered in track 9, "The Launch". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRg-fHEDS1M I also really, really love how insanely pretty some of the older-sounding 'folk'-ish music is. Have a listen to the beginning of "12 Years Later" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6uhwotthHLU and "Silver Comforts Jim" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XXX0KQDVNt8 to get an idea what I'm talking about on that end.
4. It goes without saying that the combined awesome of James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer for Batman Begins and The Dark Knight leads to some pretty awesome music. "Vespertillio" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VEal44WGDaI and "Molossus" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iZst_2xJHAI are my favorites.
5. My favorite, favorite score by him is his Lady in the Water soundtrack. It is just SO beautiful. I offer for your listening pleasure "Prologue" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0-lu9Zs5Gw, "The Healing" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U06IPcob5bE, and "The Great Eatlon" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6QTvgMzE4o.

/shameless plugging
Yes, I am a HOPELESS ROMANTIC.

For me, Main Titles from The Happening and The Gravel Road from The Village are two of my favorite pieces.

I love that one so much! Especially the ending. It's a shame that so many people hate that movie.

I know I actually kind of liked it, specially the second time I watched it.

As long as the new score had the same fundumentals of the old score I'll be fine. The mix of western and eastern instruments, the french horns and creative use of percussion and the emotion the old music was able to protray. I've like the music Howard had done so far I have no reason to believe he won't do a good job this time.
