it seems to me that if sozin could bend the lava he would have just done that. i think only an avatar could bend lava. kind of like a mixture of fire and earth. or possibly be another level of both like lightning and sand/metal.

I don't think any non-avatar Firebenders is shown bending lava. Sozin is shown bending heat, which Iroh and Zuko also do, but never lava (I think). I would say normally only an Avatar would be able to, but since it is just liquid earth I think an earthbender could theoretically bend it. But to do it effectively they would have to study waterbending.
Yes, I was disappointed with the movie. No, I don't think it was the worst movie ever. Maybe I'll make an actual review when I see it a second time. Or maybe not.

This is one hot topic.
To bend the Lava I believe that a super-high level Earthbender or Firebender could do it but like previously stated we only see an Avatar bend lava. Akin to bending mud or a dust devil. So maybe a more diverse knowledge of the elements is required. Like Orion said.
I like the intellectual lot here that makes up LAF. You people like Avatar and even though you post different opinions you are all united by a common love, Avatar The Last Airbender. However, Lava is definetly fire and earth mixed.

So I have something to add. I was watching Avatar last night and I was on the episode "The Winter Solstice pt 2: Avatar Roku" and you see the caverns carved out of the magma. Yes, Roku did that, but it reminded me, how in season 3 we see the underground bunker is surrounded by magma in places. Which makes me think, who would build a bunker in magma, unless they could control it? So since the Firelord's bunker (which was built by Sozin in his later years), is surrounded by magma, I think the had to bend the magma to keep it from destroying the bunker. So, I still stick with my claim that a powerful firebender and a powerful earthbender could bend magma.
