How do you think, avatar it's an anime?

Postby Death on Wed Aug 10, 2011 3:44 pm

Yeah, i know that anime it's a Japanese animation that made in Japan and written by japanese author
and avatar it's an american production,
but i sure that sometims you thought for a moment that avatar it's an anime even if that not japanese,
after all, anime don't must have a manga and the animation of avatar really looks like an anime and i even sure
that it created with the same animations program that all the others anime created.

So how do you think, even if avatar didn't created by japanese company, can this cartoon series called Anime?

Cartoon is something different. There are Japanese Cartoons as well, which are just as silly and childish as American ones.

But this is an American Animation. I wouldn't call it "anime" because that is a term that refers to those Japanese Animations. Avatar: The Last Airbender, is clearly set apart from those (and even, in my mind, superior to most Anime).

The style of Avatar is little to nothing like Anime, and I think it would be misleading to call it so.

In Japan, Anime means "animation". In many western countries, Anime is used to mean "Japanese Animation". ATLA is probably best described as "Anime influenced animation".

And the animation is done in South Korea, which I find amusing.

Anime isn't "It's made in Asia" -- Anime is "it's made in Japan".

It's clear that the artistic style of Avatar is slightly influenced by Anime, but I think it's more of the "quality of art" rather than the style itself. Avatar's artstyle can be easily distinguished from the massive amounts of Anime out there. Technically, Avatar is just Animation. To call it Anime would be misleading and deceptive, as 'Anime' refers to Japanese Animation. It would be best, especially for the integrity of the Last Airbender series and many more shows that will sprout from its success, to maintain that distinction.

This is why Delmaar's response was spot on:

Can't wait till Ataru stumbles upon this thread.

In the beginning Anime was just a form of animation. But as time has passed Anime has been associated with Japan so much that it belongs to it. Anything out of Japan that comes to America or any other country is considered Anime.

Now, even though A:TLA is influenced by Anime, I can still see the strong aspects of being a cartoon.

So no, it is not an anime. It is a very awesome cartoon.

Maybe that's why I wasn't talking to you?

I'm just making a general statement. If I was talking specifically to you, to condemn something you said, I would have written so explicitly within my post.

Alright, I'm sorry, I didn't know.

No problem -- I'm the one who should be sorry anyway. I should have made what I was saying clear. And sorry, also, if the tone of my last post seemed a bit angry or arrogant. That's not how I wanted to sound at all. I just tend to write like that... ;)
