Yeah, cause that's the only explanation of why they've criticized his past few movies. It absolutely HAS to be that they secretly love the movie and think they are the best films of all time, but are part of a vast conspiracy to defame Shyamalan for no reason at all.

Mindbender, here is one review where you can get an idea about why M.Night is so HATED by most critics. And M.Night has none but HIMSELF to blame for the predicament he is in. Story is too long to tell so let me just cut to the chase and say shyamalan's own 'Gorilla maketing' adventures got him into this love affair with critics/media.

It's been done before. Recently, in fact.

The movie (released 2007) was called Blackout.
Except its 3 instead of 5 and its a serial killer instead of the devil. It was absolute crap. It is basically 1/3 of them in an elevator, and the rest showing their back stories. Only in the last 15 minutes do we find out who the killer is and its not very interesting.
The killer ends up dying by having his arm caught between the floor and the sliding elevator. It rips it off as he falls to his death in some of the worst CG I have ever seen. Only one of the other two escapes.

What I'm saying is that Devil seems very similar to this movie, so its not very original. HOWEVER, with bigger talent creating the film, Devil could actually be a good example of the "typical" trapped-with-a-killer plot.

Time will tell; we all learned the hard way that you can't tell the quality of a movie based on the trailers.

Why are you so angry? I'm feeling hopeful for this movie...
Calm down.

Devil and Blackout sound similar, but I don't think the former focuses on backstories~ well from what the trailer looks like. I am actually pretty psyched about this movie until I found it it was made by the people who brought "Quarantine" =.=

less psyched~

(note actual part starts at 2:20)

Judging by the reactions of the audience people might like it...

Poor bastard. The movie should've been his LOTR, but it really turned on its head.
Though I don't feel sorry for him and still want him to direct the sequel, then again if I look at how stubborn he is with everything the way 'he' wants to do, there isn't much scope. Action sequences that should've really excited the audience, turned out to be M.Night's very own 'poetry in slow-motion'.
I still believe he's got loads of talent, so lets see what DEVIL has in store.
