Im not sure, but the way he words it its like the show is about the next generation. i have a hard time believing the entire generation before has died already... unless something really big happened, killing everyone and thats how the republic city started

I had a similar idea. My first thoughts on the previous generation being dead is that maybe that's tied into the whole anti-bender movement.
[edit] I just realized TEG also had this idea over in another thread. :)

What? NOOOOOOO!
You've got to be kidding me, not one single person is still alive?
I really hope for flashbacks now.

The interview with Bryke about LoK said that there will be a link between the old and the new, so I don't think it's as if they decided to completely forget ATLA.

I agree. I still wish Toph was alive.
But I do like the idea of flashbacks. One thing my friends and I theorize about is that there are different levels of the spirit world. Maybe people that die, go to a certain part of the spirit world or something, idk, just a thought. I do think we'll be seeing flahsbacks of the A:TLA characters. :D

Well it would seem very likely, but I guess that depends if their siblings have survived the 70 years while the world may only have been at peace for like 40 or 50 years, untill some unrest may have started back up from the Fire Nation, and the Earth Kingdom.

The Anti-Benders could have been responsible for the demise of Team Avatar. I might suggest that an opposite force of evil that opposes the good intentions of the peace keeping Avatar is at work here. Perhaps a villain that was defeated in ATLA. Probably not. A problem will most likely arise in the future. Befor Korra but after the war has ended. I think that Korra will quest for the knowledge of what happened to the previous Avatar. I also think her quest will be tied to the destiny of the previous heroes. I think that we will see reincarnations of our friends from the previous series. Probably no giant swimming animal guide for Korra but hey who knows, maybe. Korra will, apparently, already have learned the other three elements and be on a journey to learn Airbending. This is where/when the audience comes in. The viewer will know very little of what has happened and instead will be forced to speculate on what will happen. I believe that the show will culminate with Korra mastering the Avatar State and everyone learning of the events preceeding the opening episode. Hopefully a good sequel. I think Avatar will be a hit for many generations. Like the simpsons but only Avatar is the opposite. It teaches unity through effort and understanding.

That would certainly be a way to establish the anti-benders as a serious threat, but tbh I really can't see non-benders taking out the likes of Aang, Toph, Katara and Zuko. I would be insulted if they decided that were true.

I agree. Azula breaking out of the mental insitution and going crazy on them makes more sense, but I can't even see that happening. I really can't imagine how they perish.

Maybe some sort of natural disaster that could have been indirectly caused by benders, there for starting the anti-bender movement

Just because someone is a non-bender doesn't mean they can't take down a bender (it's difficult, but not impossible). Mai and Ty Lee aren't benders and how many times have they pwned entire legions of benders?

And in some ways, if you imagine the force of 50 Mai's and 50 Ty Lee's (only power in fighting-wise, not in same abilities). packed into one very angry crowd... then you have a problem. Also, I imagine if the anti-bender revolts killed the Gaang, it might have been in a non-direct attack. Maybe they were able to ambush them, 'arrest' them, and 'hold them on trial' for being benders (and in Sokka and Suki's case, aiding benders). Then they could execute them in some way. I know it sounds far fetched, but I wouldn't put it past them.

For anyone who's read the Harry Potter series, you have something a bit like that for the muggle-borns.

I enjoy how you relate your posts to Harry Potter all the time, it's amusing.
But I think you mean muggles, not muggle-borns.

I didn't say they couldn't. Some average bender, yes. Aang? Katara? Toph? Nooo. We spent all of A:tLA establishing how powerful they are, how they could take on whole armies of benders and not only survive but win. To start out A:TLoK by saying they got taken out by a bunch of Jets, it negates the characterization of their power, and as I said before, it's insulting.
