I love this theory but it just feels so obvious. Has to be more original than that... right? Let's hope so.

They come from a mixed family, like Kya and Tenzin are siblings, but are benders of different elements.
As for Aang not naming Tenzin after someone, in real life people name their children after family, good friends, and just names they like. It's totally normal. In many cultures, names mean something, and it is possible the name means something in the Air Nomad culture, like maybe it means 'hope,' or 'legacy,' or something. Regardless, it is not strange for parents to both name their children after people they know/knew and to also not do that.

Those guys are Air Acolytes - non-benders who adhere to the AirNomad tradition (http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/Air_Acolytes) - Pretty cool, if you ask me.

Orwill Yatke wrote:Remember that the bending is an ancient artform unique to their culture. When Sozin created the first colony he began a dominoe effect that quintessentially changed the culture of that area. We are familiar with that concept from the first episode of ATLA when Sokka says "Yeah, yeah it's an ancient artform unique to our culture, blah blah blah..."
Katara was the first waterbender from the Southern Tribe since Hamma was taken away. So it is a possibility that by creating a new society and a new culture that is mixed the bending is also mixed. This is why we have two brothers that are benders of two different elements.
Let us not forget Guru Patik who said that "the greatest illusion is the illusion of separation, things we think are different and seperate are actually one and the same. Even the seperation of the four elements is an illusion."
COOL SNEAK PEAK OF KYA and BUMI!! Great info...!

Score! Your post made me miss ATLA. Honestly, I love LoK, but as of now, it hasn't embodied the heartfelt nature of ATLA. I like LoK characters and all that..but ATLA man.. i loved them. I've yet to fall in love with any character from LoK.
