just one question... why did Ursa get with Ozai in the first place?
--if she was actually with Iroh, was Lu Ten her child too, or ...
--if she was actually with Iroh, was she meant to be Fire Lady with him... gah this is confusing!

My friend is actually writing an avatar fanfic ( I know, I know just hear me out) that focuses mainly on Toph, and i've been helping him keep the characters as similar as possible to the series, and keeping the story in harmony with all the info we've been given from the show. basically I help him keep the fanfic canonical. As much as a fanfic can be anyway.
So getting to my point, we've been doing research on Ursa and formulating theories about what happened to her. The best thing to do we found is find out what we don't "know", and compare it with what we do "know." For example, We "know" everything that Ursa did she did to protect Zuko. What we don't "know" is what she did. Ozai implies that Ursa did "vicious, treasonous things"
Now i'm gonna have to go off on a tangent for a moment, but for those of you that haven't noticed, That avatar series is animated very well. Meaning that there's a lifelike quality to the characters. Mike and Bryan have talked about in commentary on the show about very subtle actions that take place that you wouldn't notice otherwise. Like how Iroh tests Toph's senses in "The Chase" when he hands her the cup of tea. Basically this whole reference goes to the body language of the characters.
When Ozai mentions the acts of Ursa his expression changes slightly. My friend thinks that Ozai is partially lying. There's little doubt that what Azula claimed was true, in reference to "Dad's going to kill you." Ozai makes it obvious from the beginning of the series that he has little patience or love for zuko and would probably kill him without a shed tear. His "facial " expressions in Zuko Alone show contempt for Zuko, and pride for Azula. We know that Azulon had a punishment in mind for Ozai when he requested his father revoke Irohs birthright. As far as we know only Azula and Ozai heard the punishment declared. "Azula always lies" I think Azulon knew very well that Azula was ozai's real pride and joy, and commanded him to kill azula.
It was shortly after he began his habit of putting Azula at his right hand. Beginning with tricking Ursa and Zuko into thinking Azulon was going to force Ozai to kill Zuko. We don't know what happens after that. There's some space of time then we have the scene with Ursa and Zuko when she say's goodbye. As she's hugging Zuko we hear one set of footsteps in the background. Her reaction to these steps seems to be one of mild fear, and/or anxiousness at having to say goodbye. It doesn't seem logical that it would be Iroh since we don't know if he has returned from the earth kingdom yet. It could be Ozai, but for all we know it's Princess Yue.
Ursa uses the phrase "done" which could imply that she has indeed accomplished something all ready, and that she is going to leave which will in turn protect zuko. Mind you she refers to Zuko in particular and not his sister. In the series finale we see Azula hallucinate that Ursa loves Azula. We never actually hear Ursa say that. Or even praise Azula. Azula also say's and I quote "my own mother thought I was a monster." Now azula "always" lies but in that scene she seems to have a different attitude. Since she "always" lies then telling the truth will probably reveal a different azula. This somberness is something we rarely see on her which suggests she is indeed telling the truth. It's also interesting to note that we hardly ever see Ursa interacting with Ozai.
Going back a little to the "my friend thinks that Ozai is partially lying" He uses the phrase treasonous. He could be referring to whatever Ursa did was treasonous to Ozai and her allegiance to him, not necessarily to the Fire Nation. She very well could have formulated a plan and somewhere along the line "betrayed" Ozai in the process protecting Zuko. It seems probable that Ozai "ended" his fathers reign and pawned the deed off on Ursa trying to goad Zuko in to sticking around til after the eclipse in "the day of black sun" so he could finish Zuko himself. Although Zuko doesn't seem to be troubled by the news that his mother did "vicous, treasonous things" the news that his mother is "perhaps" alive seems to keep him around.
One must also remember that at Firelord Azulon's funeral it was mentioned that he died of natural causes which would suggest that nobody suggested foul play. And we never hear that Ursa was banished until "the day of black sun." If she had been banished shortly after FireLord Azulons death it would have seem pretty obvious to the whole of the Fire Nation that Ursa had something to do with it. It's also probable that Ursa wasn't banished, but instead left on her on accord. What Ursa leaving Zuko has to do with protecting him I haven't the foggiest. In short Ozai is telling Zuko that he dumped Ursa and not the other way around.
It would seem that Ozai always wants to be the victor in any situation even if it means lying to make it appear that way. This scene in "the day of black sun" and the flashbacks in "Zuko Alone" are mainly saying that Ursa cared more about Zuko then Ozai. When Zuko confronts Ozai in "Zuko Alone" Ozai refuses to answer zuko as far as we can tell. Ozai seems to be troubled staring into a fountain. I think Ozai is trying to fathom why Ursa gave up everything including Ozai to protect zuko. This contemplation mixed with time and his own distaste for zuko culminated with zukos burning and banishment.
Ok remember that this is a T.V. show and the creators can explain this any way they want, but it's obvious that most of the mystery in the series revolves around zuko's family. I suggest everyone read into it and start formulating theories.
Wow, this was so epically stated that I kind of wished you wrote more.
Going off with the statement that you made of Ozai stating Ursa was banished:
This is what I think happened. Ursa, being the intelligent mother-bear that she is, knew that Ozai favored Azula more than Zuko, but never thought it would turn into anything horrible until the day that he called Azula a prodigy and he merely scowled at Zuko. She questioned him after Ozai talked with Azulon wanting to know what they discussed. Ozai refused to say anything further and told Ursa to leave the quarters for him to contemplate his future actions. Ozai was more angry, more physical and scarier than usual. They got deeper into the heated argument and then Ursa demanded to know what Azulon said seeing as it could possibly endanger one of his children, and she mentions Zuko. Ozai goes off on a tangent about what a disgrace Zuko is, and Ursa retaliates and what not saying that if he were to harm Zuko he'd have to get through her first. Then Ozai, being the caniving bastard that he is states, "If you don't leave this nation immediately, I'll make sure something does happen to Zuko," prompting her to leave for the safety of her son.
NOW, she goes off to the Earth Kingdom, which is the nearest area to the fire nation where she could survive, under the alias of June. Through time, adjusting under this new alias, she has changed her temperment to a more rougher and coarser nature so no man can ever push her around again; building up her defenses incase Ozai were to find her. My imagination hasn't really made up for how she found the Shirshu... but it could very well mean that she has the occupation that she has so that if she ever were to stumble upon Zuko she would know. (Again as I said earlier, for all she knew Ozai could've corrupted Zuko to the point that she wouldn't recognize him. Hell, he does have a huge scar on his face.) So once she does come across Zuko she doesn't fully reveal herself because she doesn't know Zuko's allegiance for he looks and acts different.
...
This is an interesting story that i totally just plotted with my imagination...it now has me inspired to write it into an actual fan fiction.
OMGOMGOMG
I JUST LOOKED AT AVATAR WIKI JUNE'S PROFILE (http://avatar.wikia.com/wiki/June)
Does anyone else notice that she has dark golden eyes??
Most Earth Kingdom citizens have green eyes, or something of the sort.
