Score! Your post made me miss ATLA. Honestly, I love LoK, but as of now, it hasn't embodied the heartfelt nature of ATLA. I like LoK characters and all that..but ATLA man.. i loved them. I've yet to fall in love with any character from LoK.

Yeah, I'm going to miss the adventures. Is it just me or did the Avatarverse develpo really quickly...

I think it's about right.. maybe a TAD fast but not too bad. Say LoK is 1920, 70 years ago would be 1850 - what the heck did 1850 look like? I have no idea. lol. i don't know where i'm going with this.

Think "Napoleonic War", and you're not too far off.

The speed in development of technology could be put down to the extra resources that bending provides. Earthbenders can build massive structures made of stone and metal, and firebenders provide lightning for experimentation with electricity and such, plus fire for furnaces used in industry.

EDIT: There is still the mystery of how technology remained fairly stagnant in the whole hundred years of the Hundred Year War. Historically, conflict accelerates technological development drastically. We wouldn't have had nuclear power plants nearly as early without the Manhattan Project of World War II, for example.

Very good points! When you look at East Asia at that time, they had things like the Taiping Rebellion and if you find sketches of their architecture, they correspond quite well to ATLA architecture.

I don't think technology remained stagnant in ATLA's hundred year war. I think the tanks, submarines and ships that we saw, were products of the technological advancements of war. Only thing I find strange is that they never used guns. Even until now, they don't use guns. But guns aren't allowed in children's cartoons. Sigh.

Taiping Rebellion? I did an essay on that in year 12. Since then, I've cringed every time a textbook tries to tell me that 'World War I was the deadliest conflict yet'. Sure, if 10 million is a higher number than 20 million...

Didn't the shot in 'The Avatar and the Fire Lord' of Sozin overseeing the Fire Nation army include metal ships? I was fairly sure it did. Tanks were possibly invented during the war. Submarines and airships certainly were.

As a side note, I think we can easily say that the Fire Nation was relatively advanced because of their ready access to firebenders for industry.

I think the main reason guns might not have been invented was that bending already filled that role (accurately-firing medium-range weapon). Bending also filled the role of artillery plenty of times as well, as clearly seen in 'The Earth King' when Appa is attacked by surface-to-air earthbending emplacements. The potential for firearms was certainly there, given the presence of gunpowder and other explosives.

Interestingly, those surface-to-air emplacements in Ba Sing Se were built before the Fire Nation army gained flight capabilities. To me, this means that they were designed to counter the Air Nomads in some prior conflict (or at the very least a situation with the potential for such a conflict), as the Air Nomads were the only force that could conceivably fly.

Unless Xin the Conqueror trained his own sky bison armada... o.0

One way or another, I'm going to miss all the houses and building and everything just made out of wood or rock. All that stuff was a really nice break from the real world. Most of the time in other movies and TV it's pretty dark. The steam punk stuff just isn't quite doing it for me.
