For example how did the Moon teach ancestors how to bend water. There was not any physical contact between them, some kind of spirit/energy transfer. They just tried to move water same way as Moon did in any special moment. And they succeeded! Now, the question is: Does every person in Avatar-universe has bending power and those animals(dragon, sky-bison, badger-mole) or moon just helps to open it? Or when you meet those animals, they will change you inside whatever it means (spirit/energy/gens)...
