First: I KNOW that the plot is CRUCIAL for a movie to be successful. I'm not an idiot.

That said,
Honestly, for Avatar, I WAS more taken in by the graphics because I literally had never seen anything like that before IN MY LIFE. I was on sensory overload. The plot for me just seemed to carry me along through the whole story. I knew exactly what was going on, but I was too busy trying to take in the grandeur of the world of pandora. The plot wasn't that spectacular, so it wasn't the first thing that stuck out in my mind. I guess I was comparing the level of epicness between the Effects and the Plot. Effects >>>>Plot. (in my opinion, for this movie)

Lots of people like to say if a plot is predictable, or not, but personally, when I watch a movie, i'm right there in the moment. Im not trying to predict what happens, I just want to go with the flow. I guess I'm a simpleton when it comes to watching movies... Sorry if I offended...?? you...????

None taken. I had a feeling you'd say all that. ;)

The fact that the importance of effects is rising above that of plot makes me mourn the intellect of humanity, not even gonna pull my punch on that.
... But due to my quaint little obsession with coherent English, the bit about "could CARELESS" is more likely to make me want to suck my eyes out with a straw than any disregard for captivating storytelling could.

Better go to Nolan's Inception. It's filmed by a director who's films aren't just a bunch of CG. It makes you actually think !

Yeah.
That's what first put me off about the movie.
The fact that it was all eye candy.
But after seeing it, yeah sure the story is Pocahontas, but it was the acting, the emotions, and the way they told the story that affected me most.
I was crying by the end honestly.

But I do agree with you for the most part. The first bit at least.

Saw it opening weekend. I absolutely loved it. We all did; everyone I went with and the audience that gave it a standing-o. Sure the story isn't so original (as far as its formula goes), but it was well told and included fresh ideas. It was just so well executed and I loved its pacing (the beginning started rough, but quickly made up for it). I didn't feel the nearly 3-hour length at all. Just a wonderful, wonderful movie. I went again with a different group of friends a week later. And again in 3D. I still think District 9 was my favorite movie of '09, but Avatar is right on its heels at #2. I'm thinking about going for a 3rd time later on -- this time in IMAX. It was the best experience I've ever had watching a movie in theaters.

I completely agree. There are few people that are gonna sit around and try to point out its flaws. There's a reason this movie is CONSISTENTLY raking in tons of money (it only had a 3% drop in its second week!!! -- 3%!!!! AND reports are saying it made $25 million just YESTERDAY!); lots and lots of people love it and are recommending it. Check out any movie site; Avatar has an over 90% approval rating from viewers. The plot was simple but effective, the special effects and action were exhilarating and beautiful (unlike Transformers 2, where everything was a complete mess, with no sense of coherent direction), and best of all, it was an experience I've never had before. It's really something I won't be forgetting. And I'm looking forward to a sequel (I've heard the sequel will be exploring the moons surrounding Pandora). The fact that this movie is seeing such major success with no real big-name stars, and not being a sequel from an already successful franchise, is testament to its impact it's having on people.

I saw it at the midnight screening and then saw it 2 more times after that. All sold out shows. its still selling out here. Best cinematic experience of my life. If you have not seen this movie in 3D, preferably IMAX, you have missed our generation Star Wars.
What's amazing is the depth of the world Cameron creates. It's beautiful. Sure the story isn't original and mindtwisting but it doesn't have to be. If it was I think my brain would blow up cause it would be sensory overload. the simple plot aided it because Avatar is more than just a story. It is an experience, a chance to be truly teleported to an alien planet and feel as if everything is real and in front of you.

I do want to clarify my feelings about the plot. The plot wasn't bad, it was just predictable. The acting wasn't bad, it's just that the characters were not that interesting. I can totally see how people are turned off by rave reviews that freely admit the plot was nothing special. The movie is about being immersed in an experience. This is not a Michael Bay movie. Cameron takes you on a journey.

Plot and character wise, it reminds me most of Cameron's 1986 movie, Aliens. I would say if you could enjoy Aliens' plot and characters, you can enjoy this movie's plot and chartacters.

To clarify, I've seen it two times, both in 3D, once at midnight showing.

I must say, I was a tad nit-picky at the plot after I saw it the first time. I went again (loved it nonetheless) and understood exactly why Cameron made the plot the way he did. I'm almost positive most viewers coming out of the theater thought (besides how great the visuals were) that humans can sometimes be a royal pain in the behind. Cameron's using this particular story because no matter how many times it's told (Dances with Wolves etc...), we just don't get it. If we did get it, we wouldn't still have wars would we?

On a lighter note, you are MISSING OUT on an astounding cinematic experience if you don't see it in at least 3D. I haven't heard/seen people give a standing ovation and clap at the end of a movie like viewers did on the premiere night. It wasn't in your face 3D, and I really appreciated that.

Any one else oogling over the creature designs? Incredible.

Robert Pattinson only wishes he could be Sam Worthington. (Can't wait for the Clash of the Titans remake laskejrl, loved the original)
