*headdeskheaddeskheaddesk*
Look, you do understand that that link Sejame posted was supposed to pertain to this conversation, yes? He didn't just post it for the hell of it? The point of that link was that earthquakes of this magnitude happen quite often, so 4 major events in 4 months is not particularly impressive. They only seem really major to us because they've been made psychologically available to us via the media.

=joins abs in a headdesk ceremony=

Heck, one of the four you speak of was Indonesia, which coincidentally had an earthquake last year and in 2004. SHOCKER!
But this year it's suddenly interesting. Why? Because three other earthquakes occured around it? Check up some data on the 2009 and 2004 one, I will bet my right nipple that there were just as many if not more around that one.

The Chile earthquake had an insane number of fatalities but it's not the highest number from an earthquake by a longshot. It's interesting I suppose as you know of them but it's not unusual. There will also be many many more earthquakes before 2010 is through. It is however, just as interesting as it was last year, and the year before that, so on so forth.

No head shaking here....

I did say that it was a good link to show how often earthquakes do happen, and how it really is not that it is an out there type of occurrence, I get it but it its intersting to me because of the following:

because of the other 2 events.

BTW the 4 events I was talking about was: Haiti, Chile, France (storm, not earthquake) and the volcano.

Not just earthquakes, what I found interesting was the fact that the time-line of the 2 major earthquakes and the major storm/volcano (to me) is interesting natural disaster timing.... regardless of media.... i do not care what they say about it or not, I simply think it is an interesting compilation of events in a small time-frame.....

Now if there is another major disaster in May, maybe you guys would find it interesting? (earthquake or not)

You have to be a troll. You have to be. No one can bring out these feelings that you manage to bring out in me.

Now we aren't limited to earthquakes it makes this even less out of the ordinary.

You are fighting against the fact that you're feelings are so obviously being forced into a certain direction by the media. A perfect case study example of the effect the media can have on people. These events are not the only things that have happened this year. Just the most reported.

How about the extreme weather conditions in Brazil that killed 212 people, injured 160 and left 15,000 people homeless. Don't know about you but that's a pretty harsh natural disaster. When did it happen? This month. Yes, April. You may or may not have heard about it depending on how important your local news stations think Rio De Janeiro is.
However people not being able to go on their plane trip because of a volcano is so obviously much worse of a natural dsaster than that huge of a number of people losing their homes ( which were barely homes to begin with )
I assume you think this seeing as you use the volcano as a big natural disaster and not this example.

There's plenty more disasters from this year. So no. While I find it sad that anyone has to go through a disaster and I am interested, I do not find them interesting because there are four events close together. There are and always will be far more than just 4 events going on in what you consider to be a short period of time.

Also, May is not going to be a magical month. Disasters will happen, whether they are deemed worthy enough to be reported or not.

i do not understand why you feel that my feelings are moved by media.....

Like you would know anything I feel, beside the fact that there were flood in NJ and another in some other state.... I know about the other occurrences in the world, but what struck me odd was the storm in France was the fact of how severe the storm was for the location and season. And the volcano well you know, its rare. For these specific events to me is interesting and got my attention. Media report on the daily many devastating natural events.... mud slides, floods, and ect... but these four was to me something that got my attention above all other events.

so yah.... and if you insist on telling me about how the media got me.... take a good look at your old strange news thread.
(And the feeling I bring out in you is unfortunate, cause all you want me to do is agree on your views, and I don't thats why you feel that way. People disagree and has more than one perspective, and it may not be similar to yours. )

I'm curious, Kaite -- how did you hear about these events if not from the media? How do you know about the extent of what happened there? Were you there? Are you omniscient? Are you God, and if so, did you sigh at Chile and Haiti? 'Cause that was kind of a dick move, man.
Everything you know about these four events you're talking about is from the media. You don't have any other sources other than the media. If you are affected by what has happened, then you are affected by the media's presentation of what has happened, because that is the only presentation of what has happened that is accessible to you.

A volcanic eruption in Iceland is rare?

It's in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. . . a volcanic hotspot. There are eruptions all the time. Just rarely in area's that are populated. This is why I think the media has you, this very reason. The only thing different about what is going on now is that it is messing with air travel.

I have no clue what relevance the strange news thread has to this discussion. It's for news that you usually don't hear about, unless you mean that I myself must read the news in which case I do and do alot but have also mentioned that it has become way to predictable ( without doubt once a month a child will kill their parent over a 360, Obama will do something to destroy the country and some teacher will have sex with their student. )

As much as I would love to be god ....*grins*, no. And your wrong btw... for a small part.

My cousin lives in France, and she was there when the storm hit. I heard it from her. The other three yes, I did see it on the media, but it doesn't control me, I see what I see and weather or not I find them to be interesting or not it entirely up to my own discretion.

And weather what the "media" shows is the source of information that is the most accessible, it still does not change the fact that one's own interpretation and own affections toward what is shown is independent from the media resource.

Now I can understand your feelings towards the media if you go on to say what they say/show is an exaggerated account of the actual facts, then I can see where you are coming from. But I'm a grown person who has this taken into account when watching news/media.

EDIT

That volcano was dormant since 1820.... I do not know my volcano time-line but to me I found it interesting. I wonder how our volcanic (in the state yellow stone) activity is doing...

That's a pretty long time but when consider volcanoes such as the fourpeaked volcano in Alaska which in 2006 erupted after being 'extinct' for 10,000 years it's not that impressive.

As for yellowstone, all is normal there. If you hear about alot of earthquakes in that region don't fear, they happen all the time. There's no eruption to be expected and let's hope not, that'll be one for the history books for sure. As I said though, all is good and it's highly unlikely that there is going to be any eruption anytime soon. Alot of fearmongering with that going on right now as well.
