The Serpent's Pass

Postby Mooseboy018 on Tue Jun 01, 2010 1:52 am

positives:
-Toph's crush on Sokka is finally revealed ;)
-Aang's attempt cast off his emotions and hope regarding Appa
-Sokka's guilt about Yue
-Toph kissing Suki :D
-the Cabbage Merchant returns!
-Jet interacting with Iroh and Zuko is pretty interesting.

negatives:
-Aang's little "You made me hopeful again" makes me cringe a little (but the stuff after it with him talking to Katara is great)
-Jet's return always felt a little forced to me.
-I don't care if she's a pregnant refugee...someone needed to punch Ying in the face to stop her from whining.
-some of Suki's dialogue (script and voice acting) is a bit 'meh'

rating: 8

This is the episode that breaks the long chain of perfection (well, almost perfection) from 206 to 211.

I really think this moment was pulled off well. The animation of the expression on Aang's face when he sees baby Hope for the first time, I'm telling you, I was right there with him emotionally, and it's because it was really well executed, and lots of credit goes to the subtle performance from Zach Tyler Eisen.

The dialogue itself it what bothers me. Zach Tyler Eisen did a great job with what he was given.

I agree with the hope speech thing. It makes me cringe a little too.

The Serpent's Pass is an episode I rewatch a lot. It's got some great action and still keeps that humor.

I'm gonna agree with your rating this time ;)

Serpent's Pass is one of my favorite episodes. It has good animation, and is quite more adult then the rest of the show.

Very true. Sokka and Suki's relationship feels less artificial in this episode than it does in parts of season 3. And I was really surprised by the whole birth thing happening on Nickelodeon. o.0

War, genocide, incest, childbirth... Sometimes I wonder how Mike and Bryan got away with this stuff. :D

I like the way they had Aang and Katara water bend a pocket of air to continue traveling along the pass, leading to Sokka's idea for waterbneding the sub for the invasion of the fire nation. Plus after Suki saves Toph and she though it was Sokka- "You can go ahead and let me drown now", too funny.

This isn't the same as delivering an arctic seal! This is a real human...thing!

It's called a baby.

Yes, we've come a long way since separate beds for married couples on TV and not even being allowed to say the word 'pregnant.'

I thought that part was a little cheezy in a good way  The whole speech thing about hope was a little over the top for me, but it was good for Aang's character i guess, it let us know that he was out of the dark place he had been since losing Appa.

I really like that scene where Aang being the avatar was useless in the train station but Toph's familiy connections got them the ticket, i laughed at that. It really showed how the priority in Ba Sing Say was for tradition and wealth over anything else, even the boy who was going to save the world.
