M Night's own words on TLA race controversy

Postby tari_doe on Fri Jun 25, 2010 12:40 pm

Has anybody else seen and posted this?
I saw this just minutes ago, and I couldn't exactly find a thread to put this up.

This is a part of an interview with M. Night where he responds to the racial controversy in TLA.

Monsters are real. Ghosts are also real. They are inside us. And sometimes, they win.

The whole teaching of Avatar: The Last Airbender is that everyone is capable of great good and great evil. Aang, the main character, the god of their world says so.

And TLA is saying that there is no good nor evil? That's quite a change... :?

I think he meant that PEOPLE themselves are not good or evil, simply out of balance.

I personally think that the wording was bad. It sounds to me like he was referring to the fact that color doesn't determine who is good or bad. Since he was talking about Iroh and Zuko. I could be wrong, but as I said, it just sounds poorly worded

Every monk you see in a flashback, in that world, are all mixed race because they're nomadic.

So that negative review wasn't correct. There ARE flashbacks with Aang.

The whole point of the movie is that there isn't any bad or good.

Caleb, I think that this is a good point. The world is much more multi-faced, and is not just "evil" or "good". Eventually, it is problem by Zuko's actions. I hope M. Night will bring the Fire Nation as something much more complex than evil people in an evil country. Some may be against the war as well, and it brings even more pity to the Avatar world.

I love this idea overall. As I say "There's not bad or good. It's how you choose it to be."

I admire M.Night very much now. Unlike his previous reviews, he talks in no riddle. Everything straight, severe, and comprehensible.

And here's the irony of it, this has nothing to do with the studio system. I had complete say in casting. So if you need to point the racist finger, point it at me, and if it doesn't stick, then be quiet.

Awesome guy.

Alright, so I guess this interview proves that he is quite aware of the race controversy. *phew*

I'm really intrigued to what the rest of the interview has to offer.

Sure, the casting of Katara and Sokka, who obviously look Inuit (since they never said that they were within the show), may be off-putting and thus is losing the show's cultural Asian uniqueness within the movie adaptation but he's at least so-called "replacing" it with a more expansive, worldly cultural feel instead.

Oh and + respect points for

And here's the irony of it, this has nothing to do with the studio system. I had complete say in casting. So if you need to point the racist finger, point it at me, and if it doesn't stick, then be quiet.

I'm so glad M Night finally addressed the controversy head on.

I sent the article in an email to Racebending, Roger Ebert and some other critics that have made comments on the controversy, and the LATimes writer who covers The Last Airbender.

Glitch, lets say this report is already making this board and ASN Forums quite uneasy on the subject, since I have no comment on the subject, it is making the staff ban members for having to continue on talking about it, this is why I stay out of subject that involve race, it just does not seem right, if we have to accept what we get on this movie, then we will take it, it is just that others feel they want to argue on the subject, knowing they are risking their account getting banned for a wrong responce,

Just my 2 cents here.
