Extended Edition discussion thread

Postby Timstuff on Tue Jul 06, 2010 12:56 am

Since apparently both Paramount and Shyamalan have publicly denied that there will be a Director's Cut of this film on DVD or Blu-Ray, and have insisted emphatically that the version in theaters is M. Night's director's cut, this is a thread for discussing ideas and / or possibilities for an "extended edition." This is not a thread for discussing theories about studio interference, executive meddling, or anything else like that (for that sort of thing use this thread or this one). This is merely a thread for discussing what scenes you would like to see integrated back into the film and what you feel should be removed or altered. All discussion here is hypothetical, not official. Promise you'll all behave and hopefully this thread will stay open. :)

Here is a petition to release an extended edition of the film on home video:

Mooseboy018 has compiled this nice list of scenes that were shown in promotional and tie-in materials but for whatever reason were not included in the final film.

LINK FAIL FIXED! All links now working. :)

shots/scenes that were missing:
1. (Sokka and Katara from intro) http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/5592/c ... 13laye.jpg
2. (Zuko probably finding Katara's necklace) http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1982/t ... traile.jpg
3. (Kyoshi Warriors) http://img143.imageshack.us/img143/2563 ... trical.jpg
4. ("WOOHOO!") http://img687.imageshack.us/img687/8838 ... ayer11.jpg
5. (the map) http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/3815/t ... ayer19.jpg
6. (Roku) http://img231.imageshack.us/img231/8279 ... layer9.jpg
7. ("How'd you do that?"/"You can bend air!") http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/8260 ... layer1.jpg
8. (Katara training with other waterbenders) http://img138.yfrog.com/img138/6943/mov ... pictur.png
9. (Katara training with Pakku) http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/7432/img001xh.jpg
10. (the original epilogue) http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/7432/img001xh.jpg
11. (the firebenders from the intro) http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/6568 ... layer9.jpg
12. ("I taught him that."/"Hey!") I couldn't find the shot.
13. ("I don't deserve their praise."/"You will.") There isn't a shot for this, and it could have been dialogue just for the trailers.

shots/scenes that I think were missing (please remind me if they weren't):
1. (I can't remember if they actually showed the fireball) http://img690.imageshack.us/img690/9489 ... 32laye.jpg
2. (Zuko gearing up) http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/1982 ... traile.jpg http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/7169 ... railee.jpg
3. ("I won't let you take him!") http://img638.imageshack.us/img638/1105 ... raileo.jpg
4. (Katara's angry face) http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/8378 ... raileg.jpg
5. ("If he's real, he's just one person.") http://img188.imageshack.us/img188/7781 ... 34laye.jpg
6. ("Destroy him!") http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9665 ... 22laye.jpg
7. ("For generations people have been searching for him.") http://img375.imageshack.us/img375/134/ ... ayer52.jpg
8. ("We can do this together!") http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/4710/t ... yer125.jpg
9. ("We have these powers for a reason.") http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/9862 ... ayer14.jpg
10. (the hug at the Southern Air Temple) http://img138.yfrog.com/img138/6943/mov ... pictur.png
11. (all (or part of) Yue's little speech to Aang): http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/6172 ... aileqn.jpg

things from the novelization/manga that were missing (some might have been just for the manga/novel though):
1. Zhao temping Aang with a bucket of water or something.
2. The Dragon Spirit telling Aang about Sozin's Comet.
3. Katara losing her necklace and Aang getting it back.
4. the fortuneteller/medium
5. Sokka calling Katara a "baby-bender"
6. Aang asks Katara about her necklace in Southern Water Tribe
7. Sokka asks Yue if his grandmother asked what would she say her feelings were for him, and she says he is her best friend.

other:
1. The rest of the intro...
2. the dancing villagers

Personally I think it would be great if they could reintegrate most if not all of this material, because it all sounded like good stuff and as someone who was greatly disappointed by the film I'd be happy to buy an extended cut of it if it proves to be an improvement over the theatrical one. I look forward to your discussions. :)

I believe an Extended Cut can save the film. (maybe)

More than anything, I just want all of the comic relief back in the film. ;)

Ah, thanks for bringing that to my attention. :D

I hear you, man. If I could at least hear some of Sokka's sarcasm, one liners, and even his "Woohoo!" when the Fire Nation retreats from the NWT, I'd be that much happier. Even serious movies need comic relief, and sadly this movie had none. :(

After reading some of the posts, I decided to go see it again. I originally went to see it at midnight in 3D and I did not like it at all. I was as angry as everyone else. I am a huge fan of the series and waited more than a year to see this movie. Guys, I have to say after seeing it again, I loved it. I don't know how it was possible but I did. Everything works. It goes to show how perceiving what a movie should be can effect the whole result. Go see it now. See it again with a new set of eyes and I guarantee you it will be different than the first. Oh yeah and see it in 2-D :)

2. (Zuko probably finding Katara's necklace) http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1982/t ... traile.jpg

actually this scene almost showed in full during the montage to establish that zuko was actually tracking the group as they traveled from earth kingdom village to village. katara never lost her necklace. we now know that from watching the movie and that the necklace played no other role than just accessorizing katara's look and pleasing the fans aware of its importance.

I hope the comedy is there. but i hope the relationships are there too. Either way i won't believe it until I'm seeing it with my own eyes.

somehow as much as i can find fault with the movie i still want to watch it again right now !

It looks like they're at least starting to make concessions about what should be reintegrated into the film. If we nag them enough then we can probably get them to restore the lost village scenes, the character / relationship development, and the Kyoshi Warriors. 8-)
