I read the art book a while go (which is awesome) and am not amazed. Because the Avatar has connection to the day he was formed, and the spirit world as well. He possesses this power due to the fact that one of the past avatars lived in the world where not all Lion Turtles where killed, and there was still enebrgybending.

Lion Turtles are awesome. They are the governing embodiment of the world. The Lion Turtles and the Era Before the Avatar should be discussed always. Th Lion Turtles bestow knowledge upon the humans of the world. The Lion Turtles in Piandao's rock garden look like they have a Djed on their backs. The Lion Turtle Aang meets reminds me of Turle Island, the place many Native Americans call home. The saviors of the plants and animals and man the last time the world was flooded.

Era before the Avatar:

Everyone was an Energybender (I'm not sure what exactly that would entitle them too) and so in a effect an Avatar.

OVER TIME they branch off into four groups, learning new bending elements from the four original sources (who had the powers all along).

The art of Energybending is lost.

To keep balance overall, and as a bridge to the spirit world, the Avatar is created who can bend all four elements, and so Energybending as well.

What I'm surprised people haven't discussed is what exactly people bended in the Era Before the Avatar. What we know is that Energybending can remove bending. But what does Energybending do when no one bends an element??

I doubt everyone was an Energybender to the effect of being an Avatar, that'd be a bit too chaotic dont you think? Perhaps there were some who had Energybending capabilities while others didn't, just like in the canonical series where only some people from each nation are benders. That being said, maybe all forms of bending are just different interpretations of Energybending. Energybenders of the Fire nation channeled it into manipulating heat energy while those of the water nation restricted their use to water and so on. Why and how these restrictions came about I can't say. With that in mind, perhaps the Avatar is a being who is unfettered by whatever constraints others experience when Energybending and can thus use it to its full potential.

The concept I see Energy Bending is probably homage to Dragonball Z. They learn to bend their energy into destructive forms.

For the pre-Avatar world, I would see it something as Energy Benders were this elite civilization that controlled the world. Regular people were subjugated to their rule. They cried out to the spirits to help. So one day, the Avatar was born. The Avatar helped trained the people in elemental bending to give them the power to topple the Energy Benders. After wards the benders split up to create their own countries so that one may never rule over the whole world.
