How do the Natives in Avatar Find Out If They're a Bender ?

Sorry for resurrecting an old topic, but I just had to get my thoughts out there...

I think it's similar to how mutant powers are explained in the first X-MEN film. They just happen to use their powers at really emotional times. Like in The Boy in the Iceberg, Katara goes off at Sokka and causes the iceberg to break up without even meaning to. Naturally, these "emotional times" would usually occur between the ages of 10 and 15, but could occur earlier. So, if you get really angry and someone taps your shoulder and says "did you realise your house just caught on fire?", you're a firebender.

If you have heard already.. Iroh in the movie has its ways of knowing if the person infront of him is the Avatar or not. Maybe it is the same techniques elders in a community are using to know whether one of them is a bender. Example, Earth Kingdom people. Elders would put a boulder infront of a person rumored to be an earthbender. If the boulder didn't roll or stumble and stayed or balanced infront of him, he is an earthbender.. LIke that. I hope i helped a lot.

I think it might be a bit like how Iroh did it in the movie. It might sometimes be an accident. Maybe when the bender is very young they end up revealing themselves as a bender on accident. Like maybe when Katara was little she made some water hit Sokka or something (sorry, that's just a funny image in my mind). Also, back when all the air nomads were alive, all the kids born were airbenders.

Hey, I was watching the Avatar extras season 1 and on episode 109 (The Waterbending Scroll) it said that by the time Aang was 6 he was better than kids twice his age at airbending, and when he was 10, he was better than most of his teachers. Just thought that was interesting.

They also can get lost in a cave and be taught by giant ferocious beasts.
It's not genetic but it is common.
It also isn't explained much because it deals with a person's inner self.
