Game of Thrones

Postby Musemelpomene on Mon Apr 18, 2011 1:45 am

So I've never really brought up a thread on some other media before (since I've never really payed full attention to some lately), but I have to say this tv series needs some attention. I've just watched the season premiere and I am so indulged in this.

This series on HBO called Game of Thrones is set in a Medieval setting, basically with family houses interfering with one another with all types of affairs. Its like a fictional War of the Roses with many more houses and interfering outer sources. Here is a list of the things that I'm loving about this:

- Such a wide variety of characters that are played out so well by the cast
- There is a well provided back history and family line description on the site, and this story has a very complex and well thought plot and background
- Beautiful atmospheres and a variety of them as well
- The series premiere ended with many situations that starts the potential for further development and conflict
- (If you're a fan of a lot of sex and romance then there's that too)

If you have watched it already, I highly recommend that you read into the guides provided so that you may further involve your understanding for the story and characters.

Here is the site for the character family trees:
http://viewers-guide.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/#!/guide/houses/

The appendix for the background story:
http://viewers-guide.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/#!/guide/appendix/

And the map of the locations of the houses and such:
http://viewers-guide.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/#!/map/

Definitely look into this series if you're a fan of the medieval type of story. I can already tell this will provide some awesome action, political power conflict, romance conflict, and just overall great development.

I've been anticipating this series for months on end. I was not disappointed in the first episode -- it was pretty damn great. The opening sequence was bloody fantastic, as was the credits sequence. Looking forward to more!

And thanks for the links, Muse. That's some cool shtuff thur. xP

Iono I think I'd rather just read the books to learn more back story. But I don't intend to read the books until the show is over with. A lot of the entertainment I get out of fantasy novels on screen is finding out how faithful it was to the original. This series has a lot of potential to stay true and If they're leaving things out in the show that I'm supposed to look up myself on their website that seems like a bit of a cop out.

Also here's some OC

I wouldn't say they are things that are being "left out" since the premiere hints at things and people can figure out over time the cause of the current situation. They could have made a longer premiere and took time to make an intro explaining the history but meh. The careful and smart watcher can pick things up as they watch the episodes.

Perhaps. Considering all we have to go off of is the first episode we really can't say for sure. Time will tell if they're taking the high road or leaving the website department to clean up after them.

I've read the first 4 books... but I'm fed up with the author.

The series was supposed to be 3 books. Now its 7 books. It's been six years since book four came out. On top of that, you can really sum up the story with "rape, violence, and death."

I really love a good character, and the author is great with characters,
he just kills them all off. I'm too the point where I don't want to bother reading anymore because he's just going to keep creating new characters, having you like them, and kill them.
After four books there hasn't been anything really redeeming to the story, it really seems like violence, rape, and torture just for the fun of it.

I did watch the first episode and - a lot of the female nudity wasn't needed. I really didn't need to see the barbarians gang-rape someone. And then there was the prostitute scene. Yeah, I'll sit this one out.

After settling in with watching the first one, I can agree on the nudity part. Although its something I'm not surprised with since HBO series like True Blood and such show nudity whenever they have an excuse to throw it in. If they do end up having more focus on the nudity and sex than using the time for the younger characters then yeah, I'll start to grow disappointed.
