SotW - Halloween 2009 - The Puppetmaster
Posted to Show of the Week on October 30, 2009 1:20 AM by NightBender
As a Halloween treat this year, Caleb and I decided to give this week's Show of the Week to the creepiest episode in the entirety of the series, episode #308: The Puppetmaster. This episode features spooky ghost tales, and strange and seemingly supernatural events. Oddly enough, this episode has a very M. Night Shyamalan-esque tone with it's eerie scenery and neat plot twists.

Summary: The gang discovers that there have been strange disappearances in a spooky town. The old innkeeper the group stays with, Hama, is secretly a Waterbender from the Southern Tribe. Hama teaches Katara some of the Southern Water Tribe's past and some special Waterbending techniques, and the gang must figure out who or what is behind the strange disappearances before it's too late.

Avatar: The Last Airbender. The Puppetmaster.

Director:
Joaquim Dos Santos   Writer: Tim Hedrick
Original Air Date: November 9, 2007

Do you agree that this is the scariest episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender?

Yeah, this conversation went on for a long time. This is the most amount of comments we've ever gotten on a SotW yet. wink

This conversation is about to wear out, so Teddy, I don't know what you're waiting for. tongue

Usually the SotW is posted on either the Wednesday of the week or one of the two days around it. I guess we'll just wait till next week for the one I've written.

Why you guys think airbending is the weakest? if you didn't notice, everything is bounded by air, every element goes through air and if an airbender realizes that, he could become evilty dangerous. If the series were more hardcore, all benders could kill each others, waterbending could bloodbend, airbenders could take the air off the oponent's lungs, firebender could induce an hipotermia taking off the body's heat, and an earthbender could take all the minerals of the body off too...

But, no. and you never noticed only Katara and Hamma can bloodbend, only Toph can metalbend, and only azula, iroh, zuko and ozai (not anymore) can lightningbend...

So... I play this: Air is the most powerful element, and I'm sure the creators did'n exploded it all because they are holding a surprise for the movies. Water follows air because of its versatility, then earth comes next, and finally fire.

And if i tell u something, I heard that in the movies they'll show the airbending special power: Weatherbending.
Because of the cold and hot wind...

I said. Greetings from Ags. and sorry for my english, i've just studied it 2 semesters. lol.

Something I've always wondered; Who'll teach the avatar after Aang airbending, and is it possible for the Air Nomads to return?

Comment by: 25kuzon @ 08:12 pm November 07, 2009
I don't think the Air Nomads will ever return because there's a reason why Aang is called The Last Airbender.. although the creators might change their mind in the movie and discover hidden Air Nomads...

and if he is the Last Airbender then the only one that could teach the next avatar airbending would be.. I don't know... his son or daughter maybe??

Comment by: Kyle @ 08:48 pm November 07, 2009
I thought about how they could extend the series more and me and my friend said they should make a spin off series that takes place in a more modern time like hundreds of years after Aangs story takes place. and the nonbenders are trying to stop all benders because they think they are a danger to the rest of the world. Something like that, but that might be a little bit too much like X-men...

Anyone have any other possibly better ideas for a spin off show? smile

Comment by: Caleb @ 12:01 am November 08, 2009
A spin-off is not gonna happen, but we can dream, can't we? laughing I've had so many ideas, but I'd love to see a spin-off all about Aang's growing up, his learning more about the past, and lots and lots of Kataang. tongue

BlindBandit, you love coming up with questions that will spark wonderful conversations, don't you? laughing

I think that even though the series is named "The Last Airbender" that Aang and Katara would eventually have a child that was an airbender. Aang would realize that when he dies there won't be any more airbenders, so he needs to raise up an airbending son/daughter and teach him/her to airbend so he/she can teach the next avatar and etc. until the Air Nomads are replenished. I don't think it would be right if there were no airbenders left. wink

Besides, even if Aang did die, some other people could figure out airbending from the sky bisons. That's where the original source of airbending was anyways. That would open up another whole can of worms about who CAN bend what. lol

@bluespirit and EVERYONE ELSE:
Pay close attention here, everyone:

I WRITE the SotW's. I put in the screenshot, title, summary, credits, and quotes. Once I do that I submit it and it is marked unapproved. Nightbender then approves the post the coming week when it is time for it to be posted(I don't have the permissions to approve news stories). That's the fifth time I've said it. I hope that I cannot be any clearer. wink

Comment by: vickster @ 01:19 am November 08, 2009
omg 3 SotW and no news. lets see how many more sotw we get before we get news tongue hopefully it wont be that many sad

Comment by: Otaka @ 11:18 am November 08, 2009
@Vickster
Yah I know, it's pretty sad how there's not too much news, but I'm sure Caleb and Nightbender are doing the best they can. Ever since they wrapped up filming and news has been getting less and less. But it's November, just 1 more month until the big trailer! laughing

Comment by: bluespirit @ 03:56 pm November 08, 2009
@caleb
I hope you know I was kidding about the why there isn't a SOTW yet tongue

Comment by: Kyle @ 04:19 pm November 08, 2009
@Caleb:

Yeah i know there aren't going to be any spin offs but it would be so awesome, i would like them to do like a few more episodes just to show a few things like what happens with zukos mom, maybe a long time in the future when the Aang and Katara have an airbender kid.

I still just love the idea of some kind of modern avatar series. with a completely new avatar a long time in the future, i just can't really think of a good enough conflict that would compare to bringing balance to the world by defeating the fire lord.

Maybe when i get big in the movie and tv world i'll come up with something great and pitch it to Mike and Bryan. tongue

I can dream... smile

Comment by: Caleb @ 06:32 pm November 08, 2009
I'm gonna say this, but don't make fun of it. I'm sure all of us who are big Avatards have pretended. tongue

I always thought about modern-day Avatar and benders not being common at all, but rather the majority of people being non-benders. The benders who are few in the world(modern day, 2000s) keep their bending a secret(I don't know why, but someone could come up with a good back-story to it, like some Avatar clearing a big disagreement and resolving it with saying that benders must contain their bending and secrecize it). It would be a great story if a group of modern-day benders got together to fight the horrid forces of evil. laughing

Who here HASN'T pretended to bend? I usually do fire... tongue rofl

Comment by: Mr Suntail @ 07:35 pm November 08, 2009
@ work so i cant read all the threads but ponder this.
If the original benders bent the energy within themselves ( Lion Turtle) does that mean that Fire Bending is the purist / most original form of element bending, because the fire comes from the breath which becomes energy and extends out from their body... where as the other bending techniques require other elements to actually already be there...
Just a though. Also i dont know if anyone mentioned it, but the whole temperature thing with ice being too clod on them ( the sub Zero quote a ways back) what about when Aang wraps hisself in earth against the fire Lord. Once as body armor, once and a ball. Both times glows red but he is unharmed. Even Toph does it in metal against fire and is unharmed... Im convinced that they can control temperature. Just my opinion though. Man i cant wait for some actual movie news.

@Caleb:

Haha you sir are not alone. there have been more times than i can count that i've tried to waterbend. i've tried all of them at some point but water the most. i tried to focus on the push and pull of the moon and what not but sadly it always results in failure.

I figured someone had to try it. What if no-one has, and it was possible? you never know. smile

Comment by: Caleb @ 08:57 pm November 08, 2009
I never thought it possible, but I love to dream. I usually do either fire or water... rarely earth and extremely rarely air. tongue

In fact, I firebent this morning. tongue lol

Comment by: BlindBandit @ 09:02 pm November 08, 2009
Everyone's imagined what it would be like to bend, I do it all the time. I've lost track of how many times my teachers have been killed by a combination of water, earth, fire and air.

Comment by: Kyle @ 09:33 pm November 08, 2009
oh it's totally possible, if everyone tries hard enough eventually we will all be actual benders. tongue

the only thing with earth i do is walk around barefoot and try to feel the vibrations of anything i can, it usually fails but every once in a while i get something and it's pretty exciting. smile

Comment by: Caleb @ 11:22 pm November 08, 2009
@Kyle: Ya know, I really don't laugh when I say "LOL" on the internet, but when I read that about feeling vibrations, I really did laugh! Haha!

Ya know, technically it IS possible to waterbend. You just have to be charged statically enough. If you run a comb through your hair and then put it by a stream of water, the water LITERALLY bends... if your hands were charged enough then you could waterbend. smile

Earthbending, impossible.

Firebending, naturally impossible. Artificially possible(flame throwers).

Airbending, blow with your mouth and fan with your hands. That's the extent of it. tongue

Comment by: Deweys Dozen @ 07:32 am November 09, 2009
Your all crazy what the hell are you walking around trying to bed bend for you losers....

just kidding thats the response we all hoped nobody would post lol i myself have mastered a very effective firebending form with also no success lol wink

Comment by: 25kuzon @ 07:51 am November 09, 2009
I had a match with Naruto..... laughing
I'm in avatar state and he's in kyuubi form! LOL
It's all in my head.... wink

Comment by: Kyle @ 11:30 am November 09, 2009
@Caleb:

Haha yeah there was one time i was standing on my driveway facing my house and a garbage truck rolled by, i swear i felt the vibrations from that. And i have thought of that before with the waterbending thing, it works with a balloon also. smile

And you can never completely rule out superhuman abilities, just cause it hasn't happened before doesn't mean it's not possible. tongue

you never know... smile

Comment by: Caleb @ 01:53 pm November 09, 2009
You can often feel the vibrations of things, but not enough to see with your eyes closed. tongue

Comment by: avatarfan12 @ 02:18 pm November 09, 2009

it looks like they used one of the aang's as the movie costume wink

Comment by: Caleb @ 02:23 pm November 09, 2009
Can you link to the shot from Piandao.org please? ASN has bad links.

I am working on my own collection of DVD screenshots... I have every episode in Book 3 up to Sozin's Comet Part 1: The Phoenix King. I still need to take shots of Sozin's Comet Parts 2-4: The Old Masters, Into the Inferno, and Avatar Aang, but once I do that I will have a complete collection of Book 3 DVD screenshots!

Does anyone have any idea where I could host them all? I tried Photobucket, Flickr, and Picassa, but they won't let me upload all of them since there are so many. There's about 7 gigs of screens. Anyone have any ideas?

Comment by: bluespirit @ 04:36 pm November 09, 2009
I don't know I airbend all the time, if you know what I mean
tongue tongue

But yeah
I always "bend"
I earthbend and firebend... or at least pretend to!!
I sometimes waterbend... rarely airbend!!!!

And then hum the Avatar tunes while acting like bending

Come on... you know you do it!!!!

Comment by: Caleb @ 06:11 pm November 09, 2009

Comment by: Otaka @ 09:16 pm November 09, 2009
So, how old was every1 when this show 1st came out/when you first started watching this show?

Comment by: Fledge @ 09:55 pm November 09, 2009
I know, I'm late for this discussion...but on the second page, there was some talk about hybrid bending and someone referenced when Toph and Katara were bending mud. That was a good example, but what about the end? When both of them were covered in mud, Toph was able to bend the earth separately from the water to get clean. Katara had to go clean up in the lake. And in the Puppetmaster, Hama teaches Katara to bend water FROM plants and stuff.

How do benders differentiate between bending the things entwined with their element, like making a plant move, vs. bending ONLY their element, and taking the water from a plant?

I guess that kinda goes for metal bending too, though that seems to make more sense because it would be hard for the earth impurities to tunnel their way through metal.

Comment by: Caleb @ 11:46 pm November 09, 2009
@Fledge: I think that they bend the elements just like they normally would, and the bending effect that comes from their arm/legs/etc. affects the mud as a whole. On the other hand, when they separate it, it's important to note that there are two benders. For example, the mud in the river from the Painted Lady was bent clean by Toph and Aang for the Earth and Katara for the Water. They both bent their element and normally they would pull BOTH elements together, but since there is a waterbender pulling one way and an earthbender pulling the other, it separates. Make sense? :)

I've always been curious about why Katara needs to clean up after the mud fight though.

@Otaka: I think I was 13 when I first saw the series(maybe). I saw it for the first time soon after the 2nd season finale aired. My first episode to see was the swamp.

How 'bout y'all? What was y'all's first episode?
