This week we have the Deserter as our SotW. I haven't been able to locate any short clips for the SotW's. (yet) In the mean time we can enjoy quotes! ;)
Original Air Date: October 21, 2005 -- Happy fourth birthday! Director: Lauren Macmullan Writer: Tim Hedrick Quote:
(Aang walks in) Jeong Jeong: "Get out." Aang: "Master, I need to learn firebending." Jeong Jeong: "Only a fool seeks his own destruction." Aang: "Okay... but it's the Avatar's duty to master all of the bending disciplines." Jeong Jeong: "Before mastering the bending disciplines, you must first master discipline itself. But you have no interest in this, so I have no interest in you. Now, get out." Aang: "Please, I have to learn!" Jeong Jeong: "Are you deaf!? How can I teach you if you refuse to listen!? Before learning fire, you must first learn water and earth... water is cool and soothing, earth is steady and strong. Without a bender, a rock will not move itself! But fire will spread and destroy everything in its path, if one does not have the will to control it! THAT is its destiny. You are not ready! You are too weak!!"

I love this episode! One of my favorites of book 1.

Sokka's reaction to Katara burning is a bit harsh...
"you burned my sister "
c'mon boy get over it... if somebody burned my sister by mistake i would joke about it...
Comment by: CandidEmphasis @ 05:56 pm October 22, 2009
It's not my favorite episode in season 1, but the fact that they set up Aang's apprehension towards firebending for later in the series was genius.

"You want to stop, breathing!?"
lol love this episode, though i always thought Sokka over reacted to Aang burning Katara. At least in the wrong way. Yelling at him for not being more careful, sure. Talking him, no need for that.
I love this episode because here, Jeong Jeong gives depth to firebending like it needs control, it comes from the sun, and all... here, I found this on avatar wiki for this episode:
* When at the Fire Festival, Katara, though wearing a mask, is still wearing her Water Tribe necklace, which if noticed, could have got them captured. * When switching Sokka and Aang's masks around, Katara's necklace disappears. * When Aang saves Katara from the firebending magician, the move he did is the same move that the airbender did in the opening sequence. * The scene with Avatar Roku and Jeong Jeong closely mirrors the Biblical event with God, Moses, and the burning bush. * Katara says to Jeong Jeong "But you're a great master, you'll have powers I'll never know." Katara becomes a powerful waterbending master later on.

I remember I first heard of Jeong Jeong when I saw the "Previously on Avatar" or they mentioned his name in an episode...
I was like when was this episode... I instantly stopped watching and went and saw the episode online
So technically, I never saw the show in order... this one episode I watched late
I can prove Jeong Jeong is not a true Firebending master It's a pretty bold statement... but here is my argument: He says "water brings healing and life, but fire brings only destruction and pain" In the Firebending Masters Aang says (after learning this from the dragons), "I thought Firebending was destruction... but now I know what it really is: it's energy and life."
Jeong Jeong is a master in the "rage" way of Firebending, not a true master. The dragons, Iroh, the sun warriors, Aang, and Zuko are the true masters.... maybe some other people too.

You guys gotta remember that Sokka HATES firebenders/ing. His mom was killed by firebending, his village suffered many attacks by firebenders, and there's by a war raging for 100 years because of firebenders. It should go without saying that Sokka's not all too keen about fire (except when it's being used to cook meat!). When his sister got burned it was probably all he could do to keep from pummeling Aang to a bloody pulp! Sokka's actions were very realistic. Plus, he's just a natural fighter prone to beat the crap outta anyone who messes with the people he cares about. Aang's lucky that Sokka only tackled him. Finally, it's still near the beginning of Sokka and Aang's friendship, and Sokka's not the type to trust quickly, particularly before he tries out that positive attitude thing at the end of book 2. So anyhow, give the guy a break.

Jeong Jeong: "Assume your stance.... Wider."
Aang: "But your not even look-"
Jeong Jeong: "WIDER!"
this episode is in my top three favorites, and Jeong Jeong is my favorite character. like andrew said, it's a shame he wasn't in the series more,
Comment by: Rubix Qoob @ 02:54 am October 23, 2009
Not only did this episode foreshadow Aang's aversion to fire, it also was one of the first examples of Firebenders who were not loyal to the fire lord and along with hope showed the complexity of the many characters they would later meet. It also drove home the fact that Aang was very immature and in need of a great firebending teacher he could relate to despite being a prodigy. Jeong Jeong was a very dark and tragic figure and made the war seem more real. And Sokka didn't overreact. He could have permenantly SCARRED HIS SISTER! That's nothing to take lightly and like Infinidy said he HATES firebenders. We also get a preview of Katara's healing abilities which saved the day in "The Crossroads of Destiny" in season 2.
This is one of my favorites....! I LOVE Jeong Jeong's over-dramatic speach about the fish living in the river. I swear I tear up everytime.... ..from laughter of course.
Comment by: geeksRaewsome @ 01:25 pm October 23, 2009
@ 25kuzon-when katara said that he would have powers shell never know, its true. Jeong Jeong is a master FIREBENDER, katara becomes a master WATERBENDER
@geeksRaewsome : I think what they're talking about is their extent in abilities not the type of their bending...
Comment by: 26th Place @ 09:11 pm October 23, 2009
def. agree with what others have said about regretting Bryke not including Jeong Jeong much, one of my fav quotes from Season 3 is K - "We could try to find Jeong Jeong again." A - "Oh, yeah. Like we'll ever run into Jeong Jeong again." T - "Who's Je... oh, nevermind. If it's important I'll find out." (ps - like Caleb said, I'm just quoting from memory, I may have misquoted)
Roku - " I have mastered the elements a thousand times; in a thousand life times. Now I must do it once again. You will teach the Avatar fire-bending. *Burns random tree for no reason other than to emphasize "Fire-bending."*
Jeong Jeong - "Yes. I will teach you."
Aang - "Really? That's great!"
Oh and your gotta love Master Jeong Jeongs trick he learned from Obi-wan Kenobi at the end of the episode... Would of been heaps better if he stayed to fight for at least 30 seconds...
I disagree. Jeong Jeong seems to be a great firebender. But I think after being in the Fire Nation army, and witnessing all that fire could destroy, he may have become offset by it. On top of that, Master J.J. is very wise. Although reluctant, he knows what he is talking about. I mean, can you imagine someone who didn't know how to control fire trying to use it? Look what happened to Katara.
I think Jeong Jeong is considered a master because he left the Army (and lived!) and because he has a sort of depressed wisdom about him, not just for his firebending.

'He tried to get the first fish hook out with another fish hook'
Comment by: BlindBandit @ 02:06 am October 25, 2009
@bluespirit: I disagree with you saying that Jeong Jeong wasn't a firebending master.
He felt firebending was a "curse" and that "fire brings only destruction and pain", which implies he never met Ra and Shao (the firebending masters/dragons) and never got that insight that "fire isn't destruction, it's energy and life". Which means he probably continued to fuel his firebending with anger. That much I agree with.
So, in that sense, he had a very different view of fire and learnt firebending differently than Iroh, Zuko, Aang, Sun Warriors etc. learnt.
However, that doesn't mean he wasn't a great master.
He obviously has great control over his firebending, he taught Zhao (and probably many other students), he was a very high ranking member of the fire nation army... And he's a great firebender. To me, that makes him a master.
Plus, I doubt anyone would believe Ozai wasn't a firebending master, but Ozai fuelled his bending with anger too. So, saying Jeong Jeong's not a master because he powers his bending with anger and not the "pure" way, is wrong in my opinion.
He is a master in the sense that he is a good firebender, that much is true, but it's the theory that is behind it that really counts.
Lets take playing the piano for example... if you learn to play the notes of a song on a piano, that's great, you can play that song, but that doesn't make you a master pianist. If you learn the THEORY behind it, and combine that with practice, you become a true master.
Jeong Jeong can bend fire, no doubt, but his theory is all wrong. He has built up his theory skills, but on a different foundation than what true firebending should be based on. Jeong Jeong is as much as a master you can get if you are going to be a firebender fueled by anger and rage. If you have the correct theory you will be able to continue to grow PAST the maximum point that you could have reached with the incorrect theory behind it.
Was I unclear there? lol
Comment by: Littleford @ 01:43 pm October 25, 2009
A Question to ponder! So why can Jeong Jeong use his fire bending to fly as can Ozai and Azula but Iroh and Zhao who are both concidered Fire bending masters NOT? Zuko couldnt as well but obviously the previous members are clearly better benders then he is. Seeing Jeong Jeong on the picture and the Questions regarding him being a true fire bending master made me start thinking about it more in depth. What do you all think?
Comment by: Littleford @ 01:44 pm October 25, 2009
P.S clearly Aang doesnt need to use it to fly sense he is a airbender and has his glidder/ Whirl wind to fly around on!
I think when firebenders are influenced by the sozin's comet, they can fly as long as they can. But if not, they can only do it for only a limited time because it needs sheer concentration, and pure control in fire otherwise, that firebender can't fly. Azula can fly longer than any firebender because she's producing blue fire in which it is much stronger than ordinary fire..
I think Jeong2 taught Zhao how to fly but Zhao has no control, remember? So I think he can't fly even with sozin's comet (although it's still possible).
Iroh can fly, that's no question. It's just not shown in the series. Come' on , his little brother can fly while he can't? with all his expertise??? He can totally fly...
LOL those are just my opinions!!
Comment by: Eshutin @ 05:41 pm October 25, 2009
Yeah I'm pretty sure that they could only fly because of the comet. Other wise they wouldn't be able to produce enough juice for the whole rocket feet thing. Even, it's probably only the high level firebenders like Ozai and JJ who could pull it off.
Azula is seen sort of propelling herself now and again. But not flying. Boiling rock she still had to use the cuffs and wire to get to the gondola and at the western air temple she used a burst to shoot to the cliff. But she was able to just stand there and fly.
It's hard to say, even in real life when someone should be called a master. Usually it happens after they have spend years of study in their style and nearly perfecting their abilities. Having students is a big help, as they then have to call you master lol :P
Comment by: BlindBandit @ 05:44 pm October 25, 2009
@Littleford: From what I can recall, the only firebenders to propel themselves with fire and fly were Ozai, Azula and Jeong Jeong, during Sozin's Comet when their bending was enhanced. That makes me think that, without the power of the comet, no firebender has the strength to fly.
Sozin's comet didn't appear while Zhao was alive, so that's why he couldn't. Iroh's such a badass he didn't need to take flight in order to capture Ba Sing Se.
Comment by: BlindBandit @ 06:06 pm October 25, 2009
@Caleb: With that piano example, imagine a first person knows a lot about musical theory, a long history in music and can play many songs very well. They have a very "proper" way of looking at music, how it works, and how to incorporate that into their playing.
If a second person has a lot of technical skill and can play a lot of difficult songs very well, but views playing a piano as "I hold these three keys for 1.5 seconds, then release for .125 seconds, tap these two keys for 0.25 seconds, ..." etc. They don't see playing music as the same way as the first person; The second person sees it in a sort of mechanical way, not focused on any of the music theory the first person uses.
They have differing views on the piano and music, however they both have great skill and can play the piano extraordinarily, in ways most people can't. This different outlook on music doesn't make the first person better than the second, and in my opinion doesn't mean the second person isn't a great musician.
This is the same as my view on Jeong Jeong as a firebending master. In my opinion, what makes someone a master in a skill is what they can do, not how they think/view that skill. So while Jeong Jeong may not have the 'correct' perspective on what fire and firebending really is, he has great control/strength in his bending, and that to me is what makes him a master.
You are correct, the two piano players in your example are both great masters, but what you have just given as an example has both people knowing the correct theory behind it. If someone wants to play the piano knowing seconds more than note beats, then that's totally fine, they are still a great pianist. The example you gave has two people who still have good theory.
If one person just memorized the order of keys and the length, that's horrible theory, because someone could set a piece of music in front of them and they wouldn't know what to do!! But if someone learns the theory behind music and what everything needs, then he would be able to play that piece of music(with practice of course).
No doubt, Jeong Jeong is a master firebender, but he could be better if he didn't see it as a curse.
I wonder if I saw playing the piano as a burden? I wouldn't be very inspired to play well, and therefore I wouldn't be a good pianist. Just my thoughts.
Comment by: Littleford @ 12:41 pm October 26, 2009
I agree very valid points Azula only propled her self before the comet, She was kind of flying in the comet episodes. when she is about 1-3 ft from the ground chasing Katara and doing circles around Zuko.
@ 25kuzon The only thing I disagree with is the Blue fire being more powerful! or some of the other masters would have used it cause Clearly Ozai and Iroh are 10x better then she is! I think that was just to set here apart or maybe cause she was a female fire bender which she was really the only Girl I could think of that they "showed" (not saying there arent others) Firebending! <---- Research umm wow look now i have to review all the episodes again darn
Comment by: 25kuzon @ 01:36 pm October 26, 2009
That's not my point there. My point is, as thay say in AVATAR WIKI: "Blue fire also seems to possess more physical force and produce a concussive effect not seen with normal fire, likely due to the fact that it superheats the air around it as it strikes (the same process that creates thunder)." and "These blue flames are more efficient than the standard yellow and orange flames produced by lesser forms of Firebending, channeling more energy into the attack and likely traveling further without dissipating. "
I didn't say Azula is much stronger than Ozai or Iroh... Just clearing...
Comment by: BlindBandit @ 01:42 pm October 26, 2009
Yeah, the piano thing was probably a bad example
What I was just trying to say though is that Jeong Jeong's perception of firebending doesn't make him a worse bender than Aang, Iroh etc. because they met Ran and Shao and Jeong Jeong didn't. In fact, it's probably his fear of fire and the damage it could cause that motivated him to learn such fine control/discipline, thus making him the bender he is.
And with Azula's fire being blue, I think it was just an animation decision, to distinguish her attacks from other firebender's (such as, her and Zuko's Agni Kai and their other numerous fights with/against each other). Could also be that she's really intense and put more energy into her bending than was needed to overheat her flames, but... I'm not sure. Did Bryke ever give a reason as to why?
Comment by: bluespirit @ 05:29 pm October 26, 2009
So can we all agree that Jeong Jeong was not a true master. Yes, he was a great firebender. Yes, he had great control. But he is not an expertise... he only knows the way he has experienced, fire fueled by rage.
I really think that Azula's fire is blue to show that she was always a more advanced firebender than Zuko. She was a "prodigy" and therefore could produce "more advanced" fire... aka hotter fire (blue is hotter than red fire). And Zuko never learned how... but he did get insight on the topic (the dragons made fire of ALL different colors *and that is possible*)
I love us over-analyzing Avatar...
Mike and Bryan were probably like "We'll make her fire... *throws dart at board* ...blue. Let the fans discuss why we made like that!!"
Comment by: Littlefod @ 05:40 pm October 26, 2009
LOL that is halarious Dart board sad part is you are prop correct! @25kuzon i know that you werent saying she was better. and I also do know that Blue is hotter flame ( my Tattoo is of my sons name inside the Black and Blue flame which represent eternal Flame) But I just agree with BlindBandit that it was more to Distinguish her. but you do have very valid points.
and NO NO NO Jeong Was and is a very Talented Firebendin MASTER! I think being part of the White lotus helps the theory of Master as well because each person was a master at something!
Comment by: deweys dozen @ 07:34 pm October 26, 2009
i think Jeong is easily a master...its like star wars there are good and bad sides of the force from different frames of mind but neither are better or worse. you can just be masters of different ways.
Comment by: BlindBandit @ 10:40 pm October 26, 2009
"I really think that Azula's fire is blue to show that she was always a more advanced firebender than Zuko."
I thought of that too, but I think Ozai and Iroh were both a lot better than Azula, and yet their flames weren't blue.
And I completely agree with Deweys Dozen, excellent example.
Comment by: Rubi @ 11:40 pm October 26, 2009
@ Blind Bandit I agree Azula is more powerful than zuko and that is shown in the fire
Comment by: deweys dozen @ 03:56 am October 27, 2009
yeah she is more powerful than zuko and its a good way of showing it artistically...also maybe because she is more calm and precise her fire is more mellow and powerful, she doesnt seam to use as much anger.
Comment by: mr. abcdefghi @ 12:12 pm October 27, 2009
@ bluespirit:
that doesnt mean he is not a true firebender, he think about firebendending in that way because of Zhao, Jeong Jeong was like "Oh god, I created a monster" (plus war), thats the reason, he is not a rage firebender, hes just ashamed
Comment by: mr. abcdefghi @ 12:21 pm October 27, 2009
everybody, listen, give a look at the films article at the avatar wiki, there is an other picture of Katara
Comment by: blue"spirit @ 03:29 pm October 27, 2009
Of course he is a true firebender... but he is not a master A true master (dragons and everyone taught by them) knows firebending is not fueled by rage... and it brings life. But the fact about the two types of masters is one to consider.
And about Azula... I was saying she was a CHILD PRODIGY. She she was an advanced firebender from the start... so she had more time to make her fire more advanced (if you can say that) While others were just learning firebending, Azula already knew it... so what did she do all her life while the others were learning. Make her own firebending stronger. This is only a theory of course... The dart board is my second theory!

Can Azula still bend is my big question.
Comment by: bluespirit @ 06:56 am October 29, 2009
Yes, Azula still can bend because she was breathing out fire even after she was chained up... Unless Aang took away her bending also, after he finished up Ozai!
That ship looks very ominous and creepy...I love it!!!
I think Azula's fire is blue because she has more going on inside of her, thus fueling her energy and the energy of her bending.

blue"spirit, your right, its said on Avatar wiki or something, that Azula wanted to keep training and training for better Firebending. Although hers is blue, it doesnt mean its as strong as lightning and can own normal firebending, its just something "extra" and better to learn for firebenders, she learnt it cuz she had more time and had already learnt good Firebending when she was young.
