Mike and Bryan Talk About Legend of Korra
Posted to Original Series News on July 22, 2010 6:47 AM by NightBender
Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, talked to Wall Street Journal yesterday about their much anticipated new series set in the world of Avatar. Check it out: WSJ: The new “Avatar” is a woman. What inspired you to change the sex of the protagonist of the series?
Mike: It’s not so much about changing because we had Avatar Kyoshi before Aang. We’d established that the Avatar can be male or female and we just thought let’s explore one of those more in depth, because Kyoshi was a popular character with a lot of fans and it seemed like a great opportunity to not retread what we’d done with Aang, who was a great hero, we all loved him, but we really wanted to try something different. And we have so many great female fans out there, who really responded to Katara in the first series, we thought we have the fan base who are really going to enjoy seeing the Avatar be a female.
Bryan: Mike and I, we love those characters too, and we’ve encountered countless fans who are male who really like those characters too. We just don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that you can’t have an action series led by a female character. It’s kinda nonsense to us.
WSJ: The one image that you released is Korra looking out on Republic City, where a lot of the new show take place. Tell me about that city.
Bryan: That’s kind of a piece of concept art so when the show premieres next year it won’t look exactly like that but that’s the direction we’re headed. The first series was sort of a road show where every episode they were going to some new location. That was another new thing we wanted to do is root it in one big complex location but mainly one place. We were drawing inspiration from Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s and Hong Kong and even Western cities like Manhattan and even location-wise cities like Vancouver, a city that juts out on a peninsula or an island and has these big mountains around it.
WSJ: Will we see characters from the previous series pop up?
Mike: I don’t want to give anything away, but rest assured there’s a definite link between the old series and this one. You can check out the rest of the interview over at WSJ.com.

does anyone think that its kinda harsh of sokka to just let all those firebenders drown in the ocean in the finale (there were like 50 of them)

@iCCu Nonsense. Azula in the movie has to portray her identity the old fashion way - with the power of acting! With chi-fire Azula can hose down other firebenders with fire faster than they can find and bend nearby fires. That's why Zhao and soldiers RAN when Iroh generated chi-fire - scared the crap out of them. Chi-fire is the new lightning.

the most powerful fire bender is the avatar

@Hadi Alright. and it's i-Q-Q-u. Sure chi-fire is the new lighting. All I'm saying was the lighting bending was her thing. She used it alot. That's what she was know for besides being royal and being a prodigy. All I'm saying is it's going to be weird if she doesn't have it. Plus, if she and Iroh pretty her and Iroh will be on the same level since they can both have chi-fire. Azula won't be seen as much of of threat as seen in the show.

No, the avatar is powerful because he can bend all elements, but i dont think he is the greatest firebender of waterbender or anything

@ 01:58 pm July 23, 2010
@IQQu Yeah i understand, Azula was presented with lighting as her thing, without it, shes not as important, because in movie 1, iroh already have chifire

No, the avatar is not the most powerful firebender. Remember the avatar is really only powerful when he or she is in the avatar state. But when thier not in the avatar state thier really not as powerful. And if they are a powerfu firebenderl it is if fire was thier natural born element.

iQQu, in the animated series, Iroh can generate lightning AND redirect lightning. Azula can only generate lightning. Azula was not much of a threat to Iroh in the show then as she was in the movie. In the movie, both Azula and Iroh can do chi-fire, but quite possibly only Iroh can deflect (or absorb) fire - as seen when he protected Zuko from Zhao cheap shot from the back.

@LIONTURTLE yes the avatar is. there is waterbending master level. and then there is a higher level waterbending avatar level

I agree. If Azula doesn't isn't able to produce lighting it will make her seem of lower worth or pretty much on the same level as Iroh. The whole lighting thing was her thing and without it it will just seem strange.

@ 02:04 pm July 23, 2010
@robin no, of course he is powerful in avatar state, but without it, he is like a normal master, just with other 3 elements

no, in the episode he redirects it, not do it

@ 02:07 pm July 23, 2010
@tally Again, Iroh CAN GENERATE LIGHTNING in the animated series. He just doesn't use it very often. He can also redirect lighnting which is something Azula cannot do. Iroh is higher level than Azula but Azula is a bigger threat because (according to Iroh) she is CRAZY!
Comment by: Al
@ 02:07 pm July 23, 2010
Exactly in that episode he only redirects lighting he CAN NOT produce it. There is no episode where he makes his own!
Comment by: LIONTURTLE

Well. she is Crazy. but I strongly belive that he explains he cant create it, just redirect it

I just want azula to be ba like she was in the show. I bet m night will completely forget lightning bending exists when he writes this script not because he just doesn't want it in the movie. He completely forgot momo existed and only put him in the movie because ppl complained at early screenings. So I wouldn't be surpised. But I WOULD be pissed.

Iroh can generate lightning. It is Book 2 : Bitter Work, where he is trying to teach Zuko how to generate lightning. It required "inner calm". Zuko couldn't because due to shame, his turmoil. Iroh then teaches Zuko something Azula could not do - redirect lightning.

Outside the decrepit building, Iroh continues with his lecture. Positive yang energy and negative yin energy must be separated, creating an imbalance, and only a select few Firebenders can separate the energies. When the different energies recombine to restore the balance, they come crashing back together. The role of the Firebender is to provide release and guidance, thus creating lightning. Iroh successfully demonstrates by releasing a massive stream of lightning into the distance.
