Mike and Bryan Talk About Legend of Korra
Posted to Original Series News on July 22, 2010 6:47 AM by NightBender
Michael Dante DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of Avatar: The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra, talked to Wall Street Journal yesterday about their much anticipated new series set in the world of Avatar. Check it out: WSJ: The new “Avatar” is a woman. What inspired you to change the sex of the protagonist of the series?
Mike: It’s not so much about changing because we had Avatar Kyoshi before Aang. We’d established that the Avatar can be male or female and we just thought let’s explore one of those more in depth, because Kyoshi was a popular character with a lot of fans and it seemed like a great opportunity to not retread what we’d done with Aang, who was a great hero, we all loved him, but we really wanted to try something different. And we have so many great female fans out there, who really responded to Katara in the first series, we thought we have the fan base who are really going to enjoy seeing the Avatar be a female.
Bryan: Mike and I, we love those characters too, and we’ve encountered countless fans who are male who really like those characters too. We just don’t subscribe to the conventional wisdom that you can’t have an action series led by a female character. It’s kinda nonsense to us.
WSJ: The one image that you released is Korra looking out on Republic City, where a lot of the new show take place. Tell me about that city.
Bryan: That’s kind of a piece of concept art so when the show premieres next year it won’t look exactly like that but that’s the direction we’re headed. The first series was sort of a road show where every episode they were going to some new location. That was another new thing we wanted to do is root it in one big complex location but mainly one place. We were drawing inspiration from Shanghai in the 1920s and 30s and Hong Kong and even Western cities like Manhattan and even location-wise cities like Vancouver, a city that juts out on a peninsula or an island and has these big mountains around it.
WSJ: Will we see characters from the previous series pop up?
Mike: I don’t want to give anything away, but rest assured there’s a definite link between the old series and this one. You can check out the rest of the interview over at WSJ.com.

Hey to ATLA's defense, YES i hated the great divide episode of the first season because it was completely pointless, but I've grown to like it....it's kind of like one of those side stories that wasn't very important but still part of the journey.

I had bad feeling about this series...I was right. I mean clearly there is reason I felt the plot line was so boring. It's not meant to be as long as the original show it's just a mini series. Now maybe it could make a good mini series. I mean with it's plot it's not asking for too much...

Although it's a shame it has to be a mini series... I was hoping it would be you know longer like the show. But then you have to realize Korra already knows all the other elements except air meaning there's not much to talk about unlike in ATLA where Aang has to master 3 elements before the end of summer...

@ iQQu i wasnt implying that it SHOULD be re-made...just that people seem to be making fan made stuff all the time and it would be interesting to see if the series ones episodes could be re-edited to movie length and make sense! Saying it should stay as a cartoon, you wouldnt be saying that if the film was amazing! Actually you probably would. Not picking a fight, im just really bored today

i'm actually kind of happy that its just a mini series... i mean when i first saw the picture and the mini summary about the cartoons..i was actually sort of disappointed because i was expecting a sequel to aang's story after the war....not the type wherein there's a new avatar and the original gaang is no more... so i'm hoping that this miniseries will just be a little spinoff and i hope that there WILL BE a sequel to aang's story....that should make all avatards go AVATARDIZED again...(was that a word??? lol)

@ 04:52 am July 24, 2010
You know guys (and girls), some anime shows are only 12 or 13 episodes long, and they can be incredible! Take Serial Experiments: lain for example. It's deep and Lain's story is amazing to watch. :D http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Serial_Experiments_Lain So Korra might still be incredible!!!

During San Diego Comic Con 2008, it was revealed that a sequence where Zuko finds his mother was sketched and made into a storyboard, but didn't make it to production due to a request by Michael Dante DiMartino.

guys there are alot of shows that are only like 12 episodes and they are awesome. It just means they wont be really wasting time like in airbender..every episode will actually mean something.

@ 06:50 am July 24, 2010
yeah, but it wont be a show that you can really love because it'll just be 12 episodes, and bam, its over. Itll be a good show, but may still leave you wanting more.

true..oh well at least its something..
Shaymin: Have You never seen FLCL? That show is only like 10 episodes and its been one of my favorite shows for YEARS. Done right, a show this short can get a massive amount done! And WTH do people keep saying the Gaang is dead for? They're not DEAD. It's only been 70 Years!

I doubt that this mini series is going to produce episodes that are the same length of the original avatar episodes. My experience with many mini series is that they're usually an hour long...more like 40 plus minutes including commercials, because 12 30 minute episodes will not be enough time for fans to establish a solid relationship with the characters. That's common sense. I Could be wrong...it could be one of those mini series that play between tv shows, but seeing as the avatar world is too complex...I doubt it.

I didn't see anything said about it being a mini series.. if Im wrong feel free to post whats got everyone in a bunch Im just confused. yeah she's learned the other elements but they could take this off in a whole new direction with just as many episodes as ATLA.

i don't think it's such a bad thing.. (that way we don't have a lot of filler episodes) but i just wish it would be longer. But anything Bryke makes will be a hit..so i have faith it's still going 2b amazing!

So is Korra going to have a gang. You know kinda like Aang and the gang. From what I've gathered there are going to be charcters, Korra, Tenzin, Wei bei, and Meelo and maybe others. That's all I know....

aang's gotta die sometime... seeing as aang is my fav character imma miss him a lotttt!!! but i'm pretty sure we'll see more of him for this miniseries (in the Spirit World of course). The SW is better than no aang at all!
Comment by: T.T
@ 03:01 pm July 24, 2010
Yeah sure Aang's gotta die sometime. But dying somewhere around the age of 70 is way to young if you ask me. Sure we'll see him in the mini series but it just won't be the same.

Oh it's a mini series. That's why almost everyone is complaining. Eh, you never know guys it could still be good. Yeah I'm going to miss Aang and Iroh but I'll live. If you are going to miss them that much than just go back and watch ATLA then you should feel better

i agree with T.T it will be sad that aang died so young! makes me wonder what/who killed him... or if he just died of old age.. and eventhough this we be a short series it's gonna still be epicccc!! it's BRYKE afterall!!!

Well, maybe thier planning on making the series longer..but thier just starting with 12 episodes to see if the public likes it. Than maybe if it gets really popular they'll turn it into a full show. I hope so because I really want more than 12 episodes but I'm still happy that were getting anything at all so I guess I'll be happy either way. Unless the show sucks...which won't happen....
