The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra

The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy has been running daily features on the upcoming series The Legend of Korra for the past several days now. Their latest article is an interview with Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of  Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. According to the article the new series is due out mid-2012 on Nickelodeon, not this November as previously once thought. Here is some good news though; Nickelodeon had originally only ordered 12 episodes for the new series but recently decided to order 14 more shows.

WSJ: How far along are you on the new series?

Mike: We are in the midst of the first twelve episodes. We’ve written all the episodes. Episodes have shipped to the overseas animations studios and they’re animating away as we speak. So we’re kind of in the middle of things right now…All the vocal cast has been picked and recorded and all the scripts have been recorded.

WSJ: Are you looking to win new viewers with the series or just satisfy fans of the old series who have grown up?

Mike: We want everyone to watch. Definitely fans of the first series will not be disappointed in this one. The tone is a little older, the characters are a little older than the first series—they’re teenagers. Korra is 16 so she’s older than Aang was. So I think maybe some people who weren’t into the first show might find this one and be into it.

WSJ: Since the main characters are older, will there be more romance?

Bryan: I thought Korra was 17 so Mike and I have to get our stories straight. The main characters are in their late teens, we’ve always loved those kind of teen love triangle type stories and there was plenty of that in the original series. We’re definitely getting into it in this series. The difference is these people have cars and motorcycles and things. There’s definitely a different dynamic. I’d say the show is more sophisticated than the original series but it has the same balance of tones we’ve always liked with humor, action, drama, scary stuff and romance.

WSJ: Will characters from the first series show up in “Korra”?

Bryan: Again it’s 70 years later so they’ll appear in various ways perhaps.

Mike: There is definitely a link to the old series and the old characters.

WSJ: Who is the main villain in Korra?

Mike: We have a great villain. He’s kind of an anti-bending revolutionary guy. Very scary dude. And definitely is quite a challenge for Korra.

This has nothing to do with the subject, but I hope that the extended edition of the "Movie" comes out. Here are my reasons.

1. All this time I thought M. Night ruined the movie that looked great when you watched the trailers. However, It was really Paramount's fault.

2. I never saw the "Movie", but I heard it was rushed. The extended edition should make the movie explain more.

3. I guess the extended edition should be better accurate then the "movie". Ex: they call Aang Ang

4. The extended edition should make the movie more sense.

5. I don't know why paramount did this. It was their fault. What were they thinking. They made the 3d so cheap and made TLA look so terrible. Are they really that stupid.

I'm not expecting the extended edition to be like a 4 star movie. Though I'm expecting it to be like a 3 star movie. If anyone's reading this, give me your opinions on what I have to say. Please?

Comment by: LOK @ 02:33 pm March 27, 2011
@Unknown, but the movie would still be bad. The dialogue, the dancing before bending, the slow bending etc.. It's still M. Night's fault, but it's also Paramount's.

"Patel did make an awesome villain, with the cool mystical fire powers and demon hipster chicks- oh.....wait, you meant Dev Patel? Oh sorry, I thought Matthew Patel from Scott Pilgrim, the first evil ex-boyfriend". <---My brother's comment a couple weeks ago, lol

I love the movie but I also support the extended Edition. Sadly Paramount has compromise M. Night's original version when they decided to convert it to 3D. Now we could have seen the entire version still if Paramount would have paid more for the convertion. Of course the 3D will still sucks but we could have saw the entire version as M. Night wanted to be seen. Hopefully the studio will make amends and let M. Night release the DVD version.

@Johnny i saw that youtube video and i am reaaly interested to see what shamylan's full version of the movie was, so i'm hoping they do release an extended version. I think it could very well give them a better chance at making more money on a second movie.

Comment by: Shaymin @ 03:45 pm April 03, 2011
WHY, oh why did he have to change the story and a bunch of other stuff. The show is perfect as it is. Nothing could change for the better.

Comment by: AvatarRelic @ 05:57 pm April 03, 2011
even WITH the exended scenes, the movie was HORRIBLE, the Aunt Wu scene was stupid, they even had Ong, Katara, and Soaka DANCE retardedly, the extended scene wouldve made people have to SUFFER longer through the horrible movie. I have NO IDEA how people liked that movie one bit, it was the worst thing ever, people say its 'better' the second time you watch it. I am NEVER EVER gonna watch that shit again, i rewatched the entire show to see how the story was so good to forget about that retarded, horribly made movie.(TLA lovers, dont bother arguing with me, cuz the movie was SHIT)

Comment by: Radi0actvChickn @ 06:33 pm April 03, 2011
I agree, the movie did suck monkey balls, but I'm just trying to stay optimistic here. This screw-up will probably mean that there will be no live-action version of ATLA and I don't know if that would be a good thing or a bad thing. I'm perfectly content with the anime, but I am still intersested to see if it's possible for Paramount to turn this around and make a movie worhty of the praise that the series got.

If the movie sucks Balls then why is he hire in a movie with Daniel Graig and Harrison Ford? First time actors don't get a chance to be with James Bond and Han Solo in one movie.

Comment by: Inferno320 (formerly known as Avatar320) @ 06:24 pm April 17, 2011
He's obviously not playing a very large part if he hasn't been on any trailers so far. For all we know, he had a bunch of stuff, but they cut some of it out after TLA released.

Comment by: Unknown (formerly known as Mr.X @ 06:54 am April 18, 2011
Still, Cowboys and Aliens is still going to be a great movie. By the way, I am going to see Source Code today. I am excited ! Did anyone like the movie.

well, it is possible to have a bad movie and have a good actor in it; I like Noah Ringer.

Comment by: ICU... @ 11:12 am April 20, 2011
@Johnny,

haha thanks.
and yeah i'm sure he has a decent part. All I'm aware of is that he plays a boy named Emet... (not quite sure how to spell the name).

@6ear5hift

very true but sometimes if there is a very good actor in a not so good movie that actor can "save" the movie with their good performance. But only sometimes...

Pretty much everyone agrees that Dev Patel was the best part of TLA. He's always been praised as a great actor since his starring in Slumdog Millionaire (which I still have yet to see).

Comment by: rubixcub3 @ 11:13 am April 21, 2011
so, so far good sucess for Noah and Dev. and the others?

Comment by: Shaymin @ 02:07 pm April 21, 2011
I'm still a little unsure about Nicolas acting ability. I'm not sure if it was just the lines. She did pretty not good. crying Jackson was good, but, of course, lacking the Sokka humor. However, he did well with what he has, and portrayed the complaining side of sokka very well. smile
Nicola made Katara seem like a not-so motherly girl, and more like a surprised-about-everything-that- ever happens kind of girl. sad

Comment by: Unknown @ 05:05 pm April 21, 2011
@Shaymin,

Even though Nicole doesn't look like a good actress so far, you might never know. According to wikipedia, she is right now 16. That is a young age. You might never know that she might get better. Besides, there is a saying that " that professionals were once amateurs
