Zuko's Story Co-Writer Dave Roman Talks to MTV
Posted to Airbender Film on May 17, 2010 2:05 PM by NightBender
MTV Splashpage was recently able to interview Dave Roman, co-writer of Zuko's Story, which is one of two mangas being released in conjunction with Paramount Picture's The Last Airbender. Also written by Alison Wilgus and illustrated by Nina Matsumoto, Zuko's Story is a prequel to the film's story that focuses on the origin and background of the banished Prince Zuko, son of Firelord Ozai. In an exclusive interview with MTV Splashpage, Dave spoke a bit about the manga, which releases tomorrow via Del Ray:
Zuko's StoryMTV NEWS: How familiar were you with The Last Airbender before taking on this project? You worked at Nickelodeon Magazine for a while, so I assume you were pretty familiar with Aang and Zuko already...

DAVE ROMAN: I was actually there when the TV show first started. Whenever there was a new show on Nickelodeon, if it was successful enough we would do a comic based on the show for Nick Magazine. Those were usually just one- or two-page comics. So I was working with the creators of the show, Mike [Dante DiMartino] and Bryan [Konietzko], specifically Aaron Ehasz, who’s the head writer on the show. We specifically wanted to do comics that were really canon - comics that fit into the continuity of the show and you could actually pinpoint what episodes these comics would fit between and stuff like that.
Be sure to read the rest of this very interesting interview over at MTV Splashpage. Also, if you haven't done so already, you can order your copy of Zuko's Story via our Amazon Store.

That's awesome that the last panel of the comic will basically be the first time we see Zuko in the film. I love continuity.

@moe_joe95
That's old news man. That site isn't official, so it's most likely wrong. Producer Frank Marshall said 100-120 minutes without credits.

Search on the IMDB profile of the movie, there's an actor on the cast that is there for the voice of momo and Appa (!?), maybe they just didnt show him yet.

Comment by: Quin @ 04:07 pm May 17, 2010
I read the full article and I think they might tell what happened to zukos mom in the prequel. Is this Bothering anyone else?

Comment by: Kit-Kat @ 04:09 pm May 17, 2010
Awsome, the movie is going to be 100-120 minutes long? Thats not bad at all. smile

Comment by: Hakoda @ 04:11 pm May 17, 2010
120 minutes ? where have you heard that ?

Comment by: Hutagishi @ 04:21 pm May 17, 2010
Ya thats what i wanna know. Didn't Frank say only 100 min?

Comment by: Max @ 04:49 pm May 17, 2010
"Around 100 minutes." http://twitter.com/LeDoctor/status/13748948141
now back to the prequel, they wont be telling us what happens to Zuko's mother. the writers didn't want to touch that topic because they wanted to respect the veil that was put around the mystery of the mother. thats what i got from the article.

Comment by: Hakoda @ 08:12 pm May 17, 2010
He'S also the one that does the voices of all the clones in Star Wars the Clone Wars hahaha (geek info ^_^)

Comment by: Aangy @ 08:18 pm May 17, 2010
Awesome, im going to wait till it's out in the shops so i get somthing to look forward too :)

Comment by: Haru'sMustache @ 08:38 pm May 17, 2010
Dee Bradley Baker also voiced in the Ben 10: alien force/ultimate alien series as the voices of the aliens. His use of Spidermonkey's voice sounds like "talking Momo" in the Nightmares and Daydreams episode in Avatar: TLA.

Comment by: Kit-Kat @ 12:20 am May 18, 2010
He also voices Numbuh 4 from KND. bwahaha oh man, I used to watch that so much.
Anyway, THE MANGA'S OUT TODAY :D
I'm going to get it right after school with my friend.

OMG I just got the manga and read it. There could have been more, but it was still awsome. Zuko was so emotional throughout the whole thing, it was sad. And Azula is in it. Though it kind of seems like she....cares about him....weird. XD

Comment by: Ben_Dover @ 12:14 pm May 18, 2010
They just gave a new trailer on Nick

Comment by: SamAzu @ 12:42 pm May 18, 2010
AZULA IS IN IT?!!!!!!!
I'm so confused!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

somebody help me D:

Comment by: MAD @ 12:42 pm May 18, 2010
what was new about it ? ? ? was it the new trailer people have been talking about ? ? ?

Comment by: SamAzu @ 12:43 pm May 18, 2010
@kit-kat what did she look like?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Comment by: Kit-Kat @ 12:52 pm May 18, 2010
She looked just like...Azula. Just like cartoon Azula. Only she didn't have a bun, she had a small ponytail.

Comment by: Kit-Kat @ 12:52 pm May 18, 2010
Oh, and to me...she kinda looked older then Zuko.

Comment by: SamAzu @ 12:55 pm May 18, 2010
That is WEIRD. I thought they'd..... hide her face or something.......... because she's not casted yet......or is she? I've never been so confused

Comment by: Max @ 12:59 pm May 18, 2010
No people. Azula is in the manga, not the new trailer.

Comment by: SamAzu @ 01:01 pm May 18, 2010
yea. I know.

>__________>

Comment by: Dreamtraveler @ 01:02 pm May 18, 2010
Well, the writers did say they were not going to base her appereance of a casted Azula (since non had been casted by then) so they based her of the Azula in the series.

Comment by: SamAzu @ 01:03 pm May 18, 2010
@dreamtraveler
when and where did you hear that?

Comment by: Dreamtraveler @ 01:06 pm May 18, 2010
@SamAzu
It was from an interview, an audio interview with the writers behind the manga. I found it in the forums some days ago.

Comment by: Kit-Kat @ 01:07 pm May 18, 2010
lol, not only is Azula in it, but Mai and Ty Lee are in it too. lol, I just noticed them

Comment by: Dreamer @ 01:14 pm May 18, 2010
