Mike and Bryan Talk About Legend of Korra
Posted to Korra News on March 08, 2011 8:13 AM by NightBender
The Wall Street Journal's Speakeasy has been running daily features on the upcoming series The Legend of Korra for the past several days now. Their latest article is an interview with Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko, the creators of Avatar: the Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. According to the article the new series is due out mid-2012 on Nickelodeon, not this November as previously once thought. Here is some good news though; Nickelodeon had originally only ordered 12 episodes for the new series but recently decided to order 14 more shows. WSJ: How far along are you on the new series? Mike: We are in the midst of the first twelve episodes. We’ve written all the episodes. Episodes have shipped to the overseas animations studios and they’re animating away as we speak. So we’re kind of in the middle of things right now…All the vocal cast has been picked and recorded and all the scripts have been recorded. WSJ: Are you looking to win new viewers with the series or just satisfy fans of the old series who have grown up? Mike: We want everyone to watch. Definitely fans of the first series will not be disappointed in this one. The tone is a little older, the characters are a little older than the first series—they’re teenagers. Korra is 16 so she’s older than Aang was. So I think maybe some people who weren’t into the first show might find this one and be into it. WSJ: Since the main characters are older, will there be more romance? Bryan: I thought Korra was 17 so Mike and I have to get our stories straight. The main characters are in their late teens, we’ve always loved those kind of teen love triangle type stories and there was plenty of that in the original series. We’re definitely getting into it in this series. The difference is these people have cars and motorcycles and things. There’s definitely a different dynamic. I’d say the show is more sophisticated than the original series but it has the same balance of tones we’ve always liked with humor, action, drama, scary stuff and romance. WSJ: Will characters from the first series show up in “Korra”? Bryan: Again it’s 70 years later so they’ll appear in various ways perhaps. Mike: There is definitely a link to the old series and the old characters. WSJ: Who is the main villain in Korra? Mike: We have a great villain. He’s kind of an anti-bending revolutionary guy. Very scary dude. And definitely is quite a challenge for Korra.

I don't get it the main villain of the show is an anti- airbending revolutionary guy and scary. In what way does he represent a great challenge to Korra. Does he have great bending powers or what? I am kind of disappointed on this issue.

@ Johnny Maybe it's not so much Korra vs the anti-bender, but Korra vs a society that is very much against the concept of bending. That would be very interesting to see the Avatar go up against. In response to the article I am so pumped for this to come out. And the fact Nick ordered 14 more. 2012 needs to come here NOW!

So it is called The Last Airbender: LOK then. And there's cars and motorcycles. The more I hear about this, the lest interested I am.

@Megan, Just because of the name change, your less interested. And so what if there's cars and motorcycles, I think that is a great idea! You should wait until the show airs before judging the idea of cars and motorcycles (it could be really cool).

The more i hear, the more excited I am about this coming out. I totally trust the creators if they say we'll love it. The biggest part I love is the evolution of the atmosphere, how its taking place in this future world. Its good to have it mature. :D

Yes! I am so happy they added another 14 episodes! That makes up for a longer wait.

@ Megan There is more than meets the eye. Cars and motorcycles will not make the show less interesting unless you watch it. I also hope that there will be more than 14 episodes. Don't we all agree ?

I'm really excited for the new series! I love the steampunk world (not liking the cars though), and I'm really happy there's gonna be more episodes! Also, (this has nothing to do with Avatar, but) please wish me luck, everyone, on my presentation tomorrow morning! It would really mean a lot to me if I had my Avatar family to back me up!

@unknown They'll only make more episodes if the show is a hit like A:TLA...

Darn, I hate love triangles. They get on my nerves. I hope it's at least like it was in A:TLA, it wasn't that big of a deal. I really hope it won't be some type of Twilight love triangle or *ick* love triangles that are in some anime that just make me want to pull my hair out. xD lol

They gonna have to hurry up with these new episode to put DragonBall ZKai back in its place. I don't know who told them they could compare to Avatar anyway (clash of the nicktoons) pft. I was okay the first go around where spongebob beat avatar at the end because "fire benders aren't anything in the ocean" no one really cared cause that was a total joke everyone knew avatar was way better. But now Avatar vs. DragonBallZ is personal

@Megan→I guess they shouldn't have named it "The Last Airbender: The Legend of Korra" because Korra is not the last Airbender. "Avatar: The Legend of Korra" is better. If it's because of James Cameron's movie, Nickelodeon got the name first. (I'm typing this from my DSi, yeah)

The razzies were a big farce but it was not M. Night's fault but of the studio for fU@ing things up after M. Night got the whole movie wrap up. If you like to know the real true about the mess of the movie watch The LAst Airbender (Great movie) Edition clip on You Tube. There you will find the reason why M. Night had to do to salvage the movie. You will be shock.
Comment by: LOK
@ 08:31 am March 09, 2011
@Johnny, that may be true but the movie would have still been bad because the script wouldn't have changed, the new name pronunciations wouldn't have changed and all the other new things that didn't make any sense (like dance movements before bending) wouldn't have changed at all. So it still was M Night's fault, as well as Paramount's, that the movie wasn't good.

someone has any news from any second TLA movie???????
Comment by: LOK
@ 10:24 am March 09, 2011
Sorry @ tenzin but I don't think that a second movie is going to be green-lit because even though the first one did pretty decent at the box office, it got terrible reviews. And if a sequel is made (with M. Night still working on it), most fans won't go to see it because they don't trust M. Night and it will probably a bad movie so Paramount would lose a lot of money.

hmm, i just thought of something... korra is 16/17 and she has already mastered 3 elements...then when did she find out that she was the avatar? if i remember correctly, avatars find out they're avatars when they turn 16 right....? O_o

@ 03:57 pm March 09, 2011
@DarkBender, maybe there was something going on that Triggered people to tell her OR she mightve found out herself :O, who knows, Aang got into the Avatar state when he was 12, maybe she mightve accidently gotten into it by Anger, or emotional problems at a young age, making her and people around her discovering she was the Avatar :O

I think that Korra found out she was the Avatar earlier than normal because the standard order of monks/sages that would have kept the Avatar rituals, like the childs' selection of the toy relics to identify the Avatar, were no longer instated. I doubt that anyone even knew where those toy relics had gone. With the Avatar lost for 100 years, the traditions surrounding the Avatar were lost in greater part as well I'm sure. There was probably no one there to even tell Korra who she was. She might have figured it out from Aang's spirit speaking inside her, or maybe she absent-mindedly bent earth or fire in a flush of emotion. We'll find out of course in the show. This is just my supposition. Oooo! Maybe with Aang learning at age 12, people decided to tell the Avatar of their identity at 12 instead of 16. o_0 Maybe. /shrug

Cars and motorcycles are interesting. Bryke are probably gonna twist them in someway that they would have the feel of the Avatar world yet resemble the vehicles they were based on.

Glad to be back now, it's been a while- because there's tons of new news! Last I checked was last November (or 70 years in Avatar Universe- I come back and now there's cars...I slept too long! In an iceberg, likely ) I like the steampunk vibe coming from the new series. fictional Old style mechanical tech I think might look inspired by the ones seen from some of Miyazaki's movies, like "Castle in the Sky"...especially since Mike and Bryan saw Miyazaki's films as one of their inspirations.

Sorry, I haven't been around in awhile but this is exciting news! I'm a little thrown off by the slight name change (Though I convinced myself that's an error by WS until a trailer shows), the 26 ep count and cars (!). In all, this sounds badass! Is it really true that there's an extra half hour of footage that Shyamalan had to cut? If that's the case and if the studio truly made him cut the thing, I may have castrated him over nothing!
